[ Meet Registration Form ]
John Wilson Fairley July 25, 2009
It is with sadness that I am reporting that John Fairley, one of the founding members of COK, passed away Saturday night, June 13, 2009. John had been dealing with some health issues for some time now but his passing still caught most of us by surprise.
Services for John were held Wednesday, June 13 at Talent Funeral Home on Sharon-Amity, followed by the funeral at noon.
John was a very active man in a number of areas and will be missed by many. He was a great contributor to COK and to orienteering in general.

Canoe-O May 27, 2009
A Score-O on the lake — participants reported wet. Well, duh! This is “Charlotte-that-once-was-in-a-Drought” we’re talking about. Everybody’s wet. It doesn’t take 90 minutes in a canoe for that. Still, here are the soggy results.
And that’s it for the COK 2008–2009 season! Hope you enjoyed it. When the new season’s schedule is set, it'll be posted here. So tune in here every day until it shows up. Yessir, that’s what I'm going to do. Suuure.
Guion Farm Mar 31, 2009
Bill Cheatum has popped out of the DuPont State Forest with an arm-full of numbers for us from the March 22nd meet. He wants to take me down to Guion's Farm. Everybody tag along.
Orienteering, AARP Style Mar 12, 2009
Dan “the Man” Davis directed another top-drawer meet March 7th at Lake Crawford. Did he submit a report? You bet!
That *@%$!! Hill Mar 2, 2009
Ian Prince’s ode to the Morrow Mountain meet has been posted. Click for all the gory details.
Into the Wild Feb 10, 2009
Sandy Kohn comes through with a speedy report on last Saturday's Reedy Creek meet. A few Overtime disqualifications were earned on the Orange course — see the full results.
The Devil’s in the Details Jan 24, 2009
Mark Chambley comes across with the dirt on the January 10th meet at Latta Plantation. See the numbers now; film at 11:00.
Webmaster's Note: Oops! Jim and Laurie Taft were left out of the Orange course. Gotcha covered now.
Two Meets Report In Dec 16, 2008
The e-printing presses were all warmed up. Ready to print the results for David's Piedmont meet on the 13th... when Battlin’ Bill Ketring skidded into my office, with his laughably late results for the Dec 6th meet at McDowell.
What could I do? I should have thrown him out, but I'm a softie — I printed the results of both meets.
BubbaGoat 2008 Results Nov 30, 2008
Come an’ get your love, Billy goats! A few delays in posting were due to your Webmaster’s feasting and so forth over Thanksgiving. (“It shall not be repeated. I was making rather merry yesterday, sir.”)
Chairman David tells me that — on a whim — he has changed the meet schedule in February of 2009. The Reedy Creek meet and the Morrow Mountain meet are swapping dates, each moving by one week. Check the Schedule for details.
David Alexander: You are power mad!
BubbaGoat 2008 Nov 16, 2008
New details on Walter ("Black Sheep") Siegenthaler’s upcoming strange and wonderful meet are here. Baa all means, read them!
Webmaster's Note: Goat, sheep — who the heck can tell the difference?
Lake York Nov 16, 2008
David Alexander reports on the meet from November 8 at Kings Mountain State Park. Big turnout, lots of overtime disqualifications.
New Frontiers at Badin Lake Nov 2, 2008
Late, late, LATE! All the fault of Webmaster Blair and Hektor, his nefarious and malfunctioning computer. David Alexander is as blameless as a newborn baby. The long-delayed results from the Badin Lake meet are in.
Huzzah!
Close to Heaven Oct 7, 2008
James Sisk has reported on his Oct 4 Crowders Mountain meet, and I thought I'd share it. The annual picnic, orienteering, theoretical mathematics, Czech language lessons — it’s all here.
Green Course Added to Badin Oct 7, 2008
New Unlike originally announced in the 2008-2009 schedule, the Badin Lake meet this weekend will feature a Green course.
This last-minute change was made possible because of an addition to the map due to Josef Trzicky's field work. The Green course will be done on a newly printed enlarged map.Good work, everybody.
New Schedule Posted Jul 30, 2008
The COK schedule of orienteering meets was handed to me with a ceremonious flourish (i.e., emailed) by Our Prez David Alexander yesterday. This covers the upcoming 2008–2009 season, starting September 13: just six weeks from now.
Running on the Greenway Jun 14, 2008
Here are our final results for the 2007-2008 season, for the June 7th meet at Ann Springs Close Greenway. COK Prez David Alexander notes that next season’s schedule will be posted here in July.
No news yet of any results from the Camp Grimes meet. Remember that? It was way back in May 3. If anyone knows the whereabouts of meet director John Fairley, please taunt him severely.
Beautiful Day for Fishing May 23, 2008
Results are in for the Fisher Farm Park meet, ably helmed by Mark Chambley on May 17th. There's only one more meet left in the season.
Webmaster's Note: No sign of John Fairley's results from the May 3rd meet at Camp Grimes. Naturally, we suspect foul play and have alerted the Authorities.
Rain on the Runner’s Mark Apr 22, 2008
Sacré Bleu! Bill Cheatum has the results in for “DuPont Forest - Guion Farm Area”*.
Webmaster's Note: * French, literally “Of Bridge Furnace - Waiter! To close the Area”.
Lake Crawford for All Seasons Apr 1, 2008
Dan Davis eaten by an enraged bear! Results posted by his thoughtful next-of-kin.
Hail to the Chief Mar 11, 2008
Or hailed on the Chief, in this case. That would be Sandy Kohn's meet last Saturday at Reedy Creek Nature Preserve. But neither hail nor woods nor dark of misplaced controls shall stay the orienteer from the swift completion of his appointed rounds. (Hmm... then why all the DNFs?) You had better read the Results for yourself.
Foggy Mountain O-down Feb 27, 2008
Ian Prince delivers a misty Morrow Mountain meet. One problem — no one was there to give instruction to the beginners. (We can't let that happen, boys and girls, or they won't come a second time.) Results are in!
Kings Military Feb 10, 2008
One of our largest crowds ever at Kings Mountain National Military Park, helmed by stalwart Walter Siegenthaler. Find out what Dan Davis is reported to have done. (Gasp!) Is it true? Get the details at Results, to the left.
Happy New Year! Jan 8, 2008
Old acquaintances were soon remembered at Latta Plantation on January 5th. Meet director Jeanie Martz was “shocked—shocked!” to witness the arrival of long-absent orienteer Blair Peery and main squeeze Arlene at the meet. For the full report, click Results at left.
Chillin’ at Piedmont Dec 17, 2007
David Alexander comes through with another meet featuring Josef “Tricky” Trzicky©-designed courses. The cold doesn’t keep away an enthusiastic crowd. See Results at left.
Terrific Turnout at McDowell Dec 14, 2007
A great showing amid beautiful weather... that’s what orienteering is all about! Read all about it in in Bill Ketring’s meet report. Click Results at left.
Webmaster’s Note: The White Course results were posted incorrectly by some webmaster or other. They have been fixed and re-posted. Sorry for the delay.

JROTC Champs at Camp York Nov 25, 2007
Thanksgiving tom-foolery delayed the reporting, but the results could not be denied. (Can you blame the guy? He faced over 200 Jay-rot-seas at one event. Yikes!) See David Alexander’s trenchant summation as soon as possible.
Webmaster Returns from Bali Nov 25, 2007
Thanks to Richard Ilson for minding the website while I was out globe-trotting. Arlene and I visited exotic Hindu temples (see right) among other delights.
Webmaster’s note: Richard is a terse fellow, isn’t he? Not a wasted word in his announcements here on the home page. Well, we’ll have no more of that! It’s back to the usual bombast, starting immediately.

Results October 27, 2007
Results are posted for Crowder's Mountain.
Results October 20, 2007
Results are posted for Reedy Creek and Badin Lake.
Canoe-O Sept 29, 2007
The results have arrived with a muddy splash!
Schedule Changes Sept 12, 2007
A couple of the meets have changed dates to accommodate the
schedules of some groups outside of the COK. Please check the updated Schedule for the new dates and locations.
We’ve known about the change for a while, but have only now
been able to update our site. See Technical Note (below) for details.
Technical Note Sept 12, 2007
Our hosting company has had some growing pains over the years, been
bought out, changed names, etc. Each time they do something, we end up
with website problems. Lately it has gotten to be too much of a hassle,
and our intrepid Webmaster...
Webmaster's Note: Hey! That's me!
...has wrested control from those villains...
Webmaster's Note: In a daring gun
battle which will be detailed in my up-coming screenplay, "Blairy
Potter and the Webserver of Fire".
...and switched to GoDaddy as our new hosting company. What you are
looking at now is hosted on GoDaddy’s servers, and I expect much
more consistent service from them.
Pardon us if there are any glitches in the initial period as we test
everything at our new home. Please report any problems to the
Webmaster, or any officer of the club.
COK Needs Your Help Oct 27, 2006
Your local orienteering club is an all-volunteer, non-profit
organization that relies solely on the participation and enthusiasm of
its members. It takes a considerable amount of effort to organize meets
and operate courses given the tremendous increase in
participants. Although it may look like things run pretty
smoothly, the truth is that having one person manage a meet by
themselves is getting too daunting. WE NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS TO STEP UP
TO THE PLATE.
What can you do?
First, you don’t have to commit a lot of time and effort by
yourself. For instance, you could set up a course and not manage a meet
or someone else could set up courses for you and you could
administer the meet. Responsibilities and load can be shared. Any
amount of assistance at meets is welcome and we can arrange meet
management tasks to fit your schedule and abilities.
Second, to keep electronic punch capabilities we need more people to
manage the computer at meets. It’s not a difficult task to learn
and as mentioned, we can accommodate your needs with the club’s.
Please consider volunteering! Your contributions will make a
tremendous impact and will ensure the fun of orienteering remains a
viable part of the greater Charlotte region’s outdoor
activities. Volunteering is also a great scout community service
project.

Fill Out Meet Forms in Advance
There’s always a minor hassle getting registered at the start
of a meet. Everyone is crowding around the little table filling
out forms at once, and there’s a fair amount of delay before the
you get to hit the woods and the fun begins. Well, let’s see if
we can help.
Here’s our Meet Registration
form you can click on and print right off the website*.
Print as many copies as you need! It has the waiver for you or
an adult guardian to sign, and
all the information on pricing so you can have your money worked
out. Bring the completed registration form (and the cash-ola, of course) to the meet with you.
Application for Membership
Paying
your club dues and registering for a meet are really unrelated, so
we’ve made two forms instead of the older combined form. To join
the COK (or simply to renew), you may either mail in your check plus form or bring them to a meet.
Here is our Membership Application form*. Like the meet registration form above, it requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print. See below.

*Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader is required. It can be downloaded
here
if it’s not already on your computer. |
Meet Director's Reporting Document
There is a standard form for Meet Directors’ use when emailing
results to the COK website. Using it will speed up the process, i.e.,
less translation and retyping will be involved. Take a look at this page which outlines the simple process. It’s easy. Meet Directors, vow to be fast this season! I’ll do the same.
