  Quasi-Winter Wonderland

McDowell Nature Preserve | 5-Dec-2009 | James Sisk, meet director.

"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." — Dr. Martin Luther King

With rain mixed with snow and only a mid-40's temperature forecasted for the day — I was certain that turnout for this meet would be low. But, never underestimate orienteerers. 156 brave souls showed up to run the courses in conditions that, although wet and arduous, were nevertheless very suitable for thrashing through the woods. I attempted to set controls so that each course would have sufficient challenge and opportunity for success. The easier courses required some sound map reading skills; while the more difficult courses were all about route choices (remember: orange colored areas on the map may be open, but very rough to navigate through). The Orange course, which is typically the most popular level, gave runners the chance to exercise all their skills while at the same time as "controlling" their progress through the use of "catch features" that prevent getting lost. For any runner — it's always good to "see beyond" your target so you can identify a recognizable terrain feature that will stop you from going too far off course. All-in-all, it was a very productive & fun time out in the woods.

Special thanks is in order for the following folks, for which the COK is perpetually indebted:

1. Charlotte Parks & Recreation Department — especially Chris at McDowell for his support.

2. Alice Howren for sitting six hours in the cold trying to figure out why some runners leave without a start time or finish without letting anyone know….

3. Dave Alexander & Mark Chamley for sharing their adroit orienteering skills with newcomers.

4. Jim Murray for helping pick up controls after the meet.

5. Richard Ilson for website management whilst our primary webmaster, Blair, is fighting extradition to Cameroon.

By the way — a very nice hat was left by someone and turned into the Nature Center. Since the COK is really just a bunch of incredibly wonderful people and a few plastic tubs — we don't have a lost & found department.

See you in 2010 for the next opportunity to engage in navigational venture (e.g. orienteering)
