  Crowder’s Mtn

Crowder’s Mtn State Park | 3-Oct-2009 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

It was a beautiful early fall day, near perfect for orienteering. Crisp morning air, warming up quickly, and clear skies. We had lots and lots of JROTC cadets out for the first regular meet of the season. The White course was on the long side for this level. 2.0 Km. point to point, but one could not go direct on several legs of the course, so one had to use some different route choices to complete the course. The Orange course seemed to give some trouble to a lot of orinteerers. The #5 control, the one at the top of the deep re-entrant was the one that caused the most trouble. After talking with the orienteerers I think most did not go up to the top of the re-entrant. This control also caused what is called a “parallel error”, which are several of the same type of features. There were three re-entrants in this location; the control was in the most easterly re-entrant.  The Green and Red course both had a common control which caused trouble for some (not all). The control on top of the 3 meter cliff was the difficult one for them for several different reasons. The ones who did find this control will attest that the control was in plain view.

We had 219 + orienteerers out on the courses at this meet and I say (+) because some of the participants did not check out with the time keeper. This may seem like a waist of your time but it’s for your own safety. The meet director needs to be able to verify and WAITS for all of the participants to come out of the woods safely, and the only way to do so is to have an accurate list of who went into the woods. One may say “oh don’t worry about me, I’ve done this before”. OK, you may be a good orienteerer, but what happens if you step into a hole covered by leaves and twist your ankle, how does the director know if you have returned safely? PLEASE check out and back in with the time keeper.

I cannot say thank you enough to all who volunteered to help with this event. Barbara Scruggs took care of the massive amount of registration. You can make it a bit easier and quicker for yourself and the registration table if you print the meet registration form from the Klubb's web site and have it filled out BEFORE you arrive. James Sisk kept track of all the participants (see comments above) by handling the time keeping for us. David Alexander and Dan Davis gave instructions to some of the new orienteerers who came out for the first time. I had a great bunch of volunteers who went back into the woods to help pick up controls, thanks to Jim Taft and his two helpers, Don Christensen, James Sisk and David Alexander. As you can see some of the volunteers are doing double duty. If you don’t see your name on the thank you list, then please volunteer to help out.

For those of you who don’t read the schedule on the Klubb’s web page, this event was also in conjunction with the Klubb’s annual picnic and general membership meeting. A FREE barbeque lunch was served followed by the membership meeting. If you are a Klubb member, you should attend this function so as to know what the Klubb is planning for the future of C.O.K. Thank you to Pam Smith and her daughters Michelle, Stephanie and Tasha for hosting the picnic.
