  National Orienteering Day

Reedy Creek Nature Preserve | 12-Sept-2009 | James Sisk, meet director.

Apparently there are people in the world who like running around in the thick, humid, hot woods dodging poison ivy, yellow jackets, spiders, snakes, and brambles (I hope I haven’t scared anyone away who’s contemplating coming to one of our events.  Your meet directors do everything in their power to get rid of pests; but since they are pests – they keep coming back!).  We had them all this past Saturday for National Orienteering Day and while there were those impediments – everyone had a wonderful time and the COK is off to a great start with our 09/10 season.  We welcome back the faithful and the newly initiated to the challenging outdoor sport of orienteering!

Since our venues are still overgrown and difficult to navigate – I placed controls just off the trails with every control (except two) accessible by trail.  As the season progresses the intermediate & advanced courses will allow participants more opportunity to hone skills “way out there.”  For anyone who comes to a meet desiring more instruction – by all means contact one of the COK members present and we’ll accommodate you so that you can get the most out of your experience.

Here are a few points to remember when participating in a COK event:

  1. JROTC, Scouts, and other larger group leaders – please print off the Meet Registration Form off our website and fill it out prior to the event.  The responsible adult fills out the front and signs the form with the participants names listed on the reverse side.  This saves valuable time and effort on the day of the meet.
  2. There are ample opportunities for volunteers to help set up, run, or clean up the meets – and your help is appreciated!  If you would like to contribute or are seeking your Orienteering Merit Badge – please contact the Meet Director for the event.
  3. At times, insect stings and poison ivy are present on the courses.  If you are allergic or are concerned with your physical health regarding any activity in the woods – please consult your physician and bring any required medications with you.  At most venues we are able to contact emergency services; but please take your own medical conditions into consideration when participating in orienteering.
  4. It is imperative that Meet Directors keep an accurate account of participants on the courses. Therefore, we ask you obtain an official start and end time with the Time Keeper.  Even if you do not wish to compete or don’t finish the course – please keep the Time Keeper informed of when you depart and return (this is especially important for group leaders).

A special “shout out” to Denise Tilley & Alice Howren for their voluntary service and bright smiles!  Also, a big thank you to Jim Murray & John Barnes for retrieving controls after the meet.

See you in the woods,
James Sisk, COK Meet Director
