Latta Nature Preserve | 23-May-2009 | Charlie Martz, meet director.
Thanks to all who braved the humid, cloudy conditions for our annual Canoe-O. Turnout was a little low this year, probably due to the event being held on Memorial Day weekend, but those who came got plenty of exercise and plenty wet for their troubles. A nice rain halfway through the event helped wash off the sweat from all of the hard work of paddling.
The day began with a fleet of Boy Scouts with flags affixed to their boats rounding the corner from the Public Canoe Access. I could have sworn it was a fleet of pirate ships at first, and made ready to run for the hills. After realizing my mistake I quickly explained the rules of the Meet to them and sent them on their way. The Canoe-O is a Score-O where each control is worth a certain amount of points based on the distance or difficulty. The competitor who accumulates the most points and gets back to the start within a set time (in this case, 90 minutes) is the winner. Any team over 90 minutes was penalized one point per minute, which really hurt some teams in the end. Most teams found getting wet unavoidable even without the rain as many controls were hung out over the water or in places where it was just plain hard to beach canoes. Good thing we don’t do the Canoe-O in the winter!
Ice-skate O?
O no.
Many, many thanks to my Mom, Jeanie for helping run the registration table. It’s best if I don’t have to worry about the money part. Also thanks to Walter, David, Jim and Matt for picking up controls. I left my 8 ½ months pregnant wife at home to run the Meet and had to leave early to check on her. It’s great that we have members in the Club who are always willing to help out. Next year the Canoe-O won’t be on a Holiday, so try something different and come out and get wet next year!

Webmaster's Note: You can see how much difference that a minute makes in these results! The Vikings and the Norsemen — appropriately enough — were tied on points, and neither had penalties. But out of an hour and twenty minutes in the race, the Vikings edged their Norse compatriots by just two minutes and took the 6th place spot from them. Nice going, everyone.
