“It is a Good Day to Orienteer”

McDowell Nature Preserve | 6-Dec-2008 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

The weather gave us a cold and overcast morning, not a very nice day for a hike through the woods. But the weather was a good day for Orienteering. Plenty of the runners came back in huffing and puffing and sweating. We only had 139 people come out with our regular mix of Boy Scouts, JROTC, Klubb members and new friends. We seem to have had a lot of DNF (did not finish) on the Orange course. I thought I had set a rather easy Orange course, with plenty of navigational aids along the way. There were lots of route choices, backstops, attack points and handrails to use. If you are unfamiliar with these terms or how to use these orienteering methods, please ask one of the Klubb members at the next meet and we will be more than glad to explain them to you. We want you to enjoy your time orienteering, and finishing course will make your Orienteering experience that much more enjoyable. We want you to come back and Orienteer with us again.

Thank you to all who helped me put on this meet. Barbara Scruggs for her patience with registration and time keeping, James Sisk for time keeping (and E-Punch, which we didn’t have due to technical difficulties). Thanks to Joey and Mark Cichonski for control pick-up. (Note Joey and Mark’s time on the White and Orange courses:  they did both courses while picking up controls at the same time.) Thanks to John Barns, John Fairley for control pick-up, and Jim Murry, who cleaned up where the water control was. Thank you for your extra efforts.
