A cold but beautiful day at Kings Mountain. For us as meet workers it was really on the cold side, but I think for the competitors it was not too bad. At least we did not have all the wind I encountered the day before as I was setting controls.
Besides the local meet with White, Yellow, Orange and Green courses, this event was also the BubbaGoat. A “goat” is a long distance event with a mass start and some other special rules made up by the Head Goat (meet director). Following another competitor is specifically allowed, but this year I did not see anybody just blindly following another competitor. Another special rule was that each competitor was allowed to skip one control of their choice. Of course, while setting the courses I made sure that there was no obvious control to skip. It seems that my plan worked. Some skipped #7, at least one skipped #8, some skipped #11, and at least one skipped #13.
The “following allowed” rule seemed to work out as well. David Alexander took the lead to the first control but went into the wrong reentrant, and just about all of the competitors followed him into that wrong reentrant.
All together we had 206 people and one dog out on the courses, 24 people were on the BubbaGoat courses.
