  Close to Heaven

Crowders Mountain State Park | 4-Oct-2008 | James Sisk, meet director.

There may have been a gas shortage, but there was no shortage of people wanting to be outside on a clear, warm beautiful fall day. Although the crowd was a little less than previous years, 82 runners still met the challenge of up & down the mountain (with some “wait-a-minute” vines thrown in for good measure). It was a little difficult coming up with courses for this park since the ‘lake area’ was closed for trail renovation and the terrain in most of the park is too formidable even for Josef. Nevertheless, runners found some challenge in their course – some to the point of finally yelling “calf rope” and “uncle!”

The advanced course was listed as Brown; but David reminded me that elevation gains also come into the equation when determining the course type – so it’s really a Green course (dark chocolate Brown maybe?). On the other three courses I put in a control or two just outside of runners’ comfort-zones so that they can learn from it and hopefully gain the confidence to try to challenge themselves more. Don’t forget that free lessons are available at every meet and the veterans are always eager to help you get to the next level.

A big shout-out is definitely in order to Alice Howren for volunteering (she thought she was going to be paid – HA!); to control pick-up volunteers (Jim & David); and for David’s lovely crew who procured Hillbilly’s BBQ for our annual picnic. Orienteering & North Carolina Bar-b-que:  Is there anything closer to heaven*? Also, many thanks to the wonderful park staff for their support of our club.

Webmaster’s Note: *The answer is "No". Observe Fermi’s Next-to-last Theorem:
     (COK + BBQNC ) ≈ Heaven
This is pretty dang conclusive, if you ask me.

The permanent orienteering course at Crowder’s Mountain was recently updated with new controls and map (ask for it at the Visitors’ Center). This park’s overall orienteering map is the oldest in our inventory and is scheduled for updating this year by Josef Trzicky (“Děkuji, Josef!” – which either means ‘thanks’ or ‘meatloaf’ in Czech, depending on which website you translate from). See you in the woods!
