Morrow Mountain State Park | 23-Feb-2008 | Ian Prince, meet director.
Mother Nature was playing hide and seek with the control features as I tried to set the course in the dense fog
early Saturday morning. The controls were all set in time and seemed to be all in the right place as no one came back with any “constructive” comments. Feedback was good with “long course” being the predominate description being used. Yes, they were longer and on the hilly side but they really stressed route choice. That didn’t seem to faze a couple of our more competitive runners as Walter turned in a time that I didn’t think was possible given the length and elevation gain. My biggest concern was on the white and yellow. I think they were too difficult but the trail system at the State Park is not really conducive to the easier, shorter courses.
Turn out was low with less than 100 people on the courses. I am sure the weather kept some away and the distance to Morrow Mountain dissuaded the rest. We had a good showing from BOK as we always do at this meet location. My thanks go out to my Adventure Racer teammate Alex for going out with me in the dark fog to set the course and staying with me till the park closed to take it down. He also managed the timers table while I checked people in. Charlie walked the Red course to make sure no mistakes were made in the fog.
My biggest struggle was not having anyone to do teaching for the beginners. I had one beginner that I was trying to teach while checking people in and I could tell this was not sinking in. I turned to check in some one else, and when I turned back she had started out on the white course before she was ready. A fellow adventure racer named Stephen Morris had just left out on the Red course. He found her on the other side of the hill and stayed with her for the next hour and a half walking, talking and teaching as they went. Stephen took a DNF on the Red but deserves a lot more. Thank you.
Webmaster’s Note: We apologize to any beginners who felt left out. COK meets strive to have instruction available at 10:00 AM. Please give us another chance in March, when we'll have two meets and instructors available. (Kudos to Stephen Morris for stepping into the gap.)
