Kings Mountain National Military Park | 2-Feb-2008 | Walter Siegenthaler, meet director.

We had another great meet at Kings Mountain National Military Park. Heavy rain on Friday morning had me worried about setting out the controls in cold wet weather, but the rain stopped by noon and the sun came out. I was able to put all the controls, except White, and the water into the woods without getting wet (at least not from the outside). I only got a few e-mails, mainly from some Boy Scouts, leading up to the event, so I figured the turnout would not be that great. Well, was I wrong! By 9:30 folks started pouring into the amphitheater, heading for the registration desk. A few hours later we had started 92 individuals or groups with a total of 202 participants. I believe this was probably the biggest turnout we ever had at Kings Mountain National Military Park. Having the meet at this location in the middle of the winter allowed us to enjoy the very open woods this park has to offer.

Once again I started my course planning for the red and green courses by setting a leg that was 1K+ with a number of hills on the straight line. The challenge for the competitors is to stay concentrated over a longer period of time. I think Dan Davis failed the test; he drifted too far to the west and ran “off” the map*. It’s interesting how we can make things match when we are 500 meters away from where we think we are. There is a positive side to Dan’s side trip, he reports that the terrain further west is interesting and worth mapping. Thanks Dan for checking out this area, but you really didn’t have to do it on the clock.

*Dan Davis, off the map? Impossible! This is nothing but irresponsible rumor at best, and slanderous Character Assasination at worst. For shame, Walter!

A BIG thank you to the volunteers who helped me to handle the big crowd: Ken and Leslie Carlson for handling the registration; Leslie also helped to pick up controls. Bill Ketring and Mark Chamley for running the electronic punching and picking up controls. David Alexander, instructions and control pick up. Many thanks also to the staff at Kings Mountain National Military Park, they are always very accommodating and make us feel welcome.
