Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 5-Jan-2008 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

A morning temperature in the low 20’s didn’t deter 224 orienteerers from going out into the woods. That number is my best estimation because many people did not get a start time. [PLEASE REMEMBER:  You must check out with the timer before starting a course and check back in when you return; the only way we can know if you are lost/missing/injured is to go by what is recorded by the timer; this is for your own safety.]

There were 12 Red runners, 21 Green, and the remaining ones were almost evenly divided among the Orange, Yellow and White courses. The participants included JROTC groups from Blue Ridge, Sun Valley, Easley Vance, Great Falls and South Mecklenburg, Boy Scout troops 80, 118. 173 and 515, and several adventure racers. It was great to see orienteerers of all ages and abilities having a good time on a beautiful day.

Thank you to my son Charlie for helping Boy Scouts Jeffrey, Jeremy and TJ hang the white control flags, for timing, and for picking up the red control flags (while running the course). And thanks to Bill Ketring, Jim Murray and John Barnes for picking up the rest of the flags. We couldn’t have meets without helpers!

FOUND AT THE SHELTER AND ON THE COURSES:  water bottle with cover, grey sweatshirt, two pairs of sunglasses, pocket knife. Please contact me via email if you have lost any of these items and give me a detailed description.
