McDowell Nature Preserve | 1-Dec-2007 | Bill Ketring, meet director.
What a great day for a hike in the woods, beautiful clear skies with just a touch of crispness in the air, that is, after the very chilly start to the day wore off. The courses gave a tour of the rather trashy (manmade objects) side of the park. This is due to the fact that we used a lot of the northern end of the park which is the newer acreage added to the park. We had a total of 241 orienteerers out on five levels of courses, what a terrific turnout. None of the courses presented much problem Some orienteerers may have taken on more than they were able to master but the results speak out for good courses. Just one problem was noted which in turn brings out a good training tip. There was a mix up between the course setter and the clue sheet maker (me) where the green course didn’t match. The first five orienteerers out didn’t even notice the error. A first time orienteering couple brought it to my attention and a new clue sheet was quickly made. My apologies to those first five who may have had trouble in the field. The training tip is to cross check the clue sheet with what is drawn on the map. This not only verifies that the two are in sync but it also helps you learn how the control symbols and the map symbols go together.
As always I would like to thank all of my volunteers, without whose help this event could not have gone on. Thanks to Dick and Silvia Davis for being the course setters, Dick’s help with instruction, Silvia with registration and both of them for control pick up. Don Christenson did a great job at the registration desk with so many participants. Barbara Scruggs was a terrific time keeper (again with so many participants) and also helped with control pick up. James Sisk bravely took on the often troubling duties of the E-Punch computer and helped with control pick up. And a special thank you to the Klubb’s two newest volunteers, John Barns and Jim Murray who both helped with control pick up. For those of you who haven’t volunteered to help the Klubb, ask John and Jim and they’ll tell you that it was painless and it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling all over.
Webmaster’s Note: I goofed! The White Course results were originally posted as a copy of the Yellow Course results. Bill Ketring set me straight. The White Course is now reported faithfully.
