Crowders Mountain State Park| 20-Oct-2007 | James Sisk, meet director.
You couldn't ask for a better day to orienteer than this meet had on
Saturday. 75 participants enjoyed the pristine weather and some
rather challenging courses at Crowder's Mountain. I attempted to set
courses so that each level could exercise their compass skills a
little more; which made all levels a bit more difficult than is
typical. Nevertheless, folks on the easier courses took up the
challenge and did very well. Not so much with the orange level. Out of
15 groups or individuals there were nine "did not finish" results
meaning more than 50% were unsuccessful. Mea culpa with that one
since you shouldn't shoot the piano player. Maybe the elevation gain
was a bit too much or maybe the lack of hard "catch features" stumped
some up. It's still good to stretch your limits sometimes with
orienteering and to try the harder courses from time-to-time. That's
the only way to improve and learn from your mistakes. Red course
runners (all navigational virtuosos) did very well even though the
first three controls were deliberately and with malice aforethought
located for maximum sufferance (again, only to make you a better
orienteerer). All-in-all it was a good meet with plenty of
opportunity for honing map & compass skills.
Our annual picnic and meeting were also enjoyed with plenty of thanks
to our venerable President, David Alexander, and his family for
arranging a wonderful meal. The Klubb's business was discussed and
plans made for the future. A central, recurring issue that did come up
was the fact that while meet participation (in terms of the number of
people who go out on courses) is up; meet participation (in terms of
the number of people who help out) is down. The same notion applies to
active membership which has declined over the past several
seasons. Please consider joining the COK not only for the map price
discount and the esteem heaped upon you from others - but, also to
keep this unique and fun outdoor sport robust for the future. ANY help
with meet management is certainly welcome and we appreciate active,
supportive membership.
A last [special] thanks to Don Christensen (wearing his chartreuse
heart medal - orienteering equivalent to a purple heart) for his help
and to the staff of Crowder's Mountain State Park for their wonderful
support & concern for the club's activities. We are very fortunate in
our area to have such patronage from state and county park management.
