Badin Lake Recreation Area| 13-Oct-2007 | David Alexander, meet director.
Kings Mt Point in the Badin Lake Recreation Area of the Uwharrie
National Forrest is just northeast of Albemarle. It takes a little
bit longer to get there than most of the other parks we orienteer in
but I thought if would be worth the extra drive. The forest is very
open with stands of mature hardwood. The abundance of boulders and
evidence of gold mining from the past makes for plenty of point
features. The mapped area was fairly small, just the day use area and
the northern most peninsula. White, Yellow and Orange courses were
offered. The meet was held mostly as a promotional meet in
conjunction with the Uwharrie Mountain Festival, an annual event
promoting outdoor sports and recreational activities in the area. The
hope is to generate enough interest to warrant mapping a larger
portion of the National Forest and hold regular meets there. As you
can see from the results below, the turn out was pretty good
considering the limited courses offered. Look for future meets to
utilize bigger and better maps and offer the full range of courses.
Thanks to Pam Smith who helped with registration, time keeping and
control pick-up.
