Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 29-Sept-2007 | Charlie Martz, meet director.
With any Canoe-O the course setter is somewhat constrained by the limits of the water. This year however, there was a lot less water and a lot more mud. Since lake levels were down about 5 feet below normal, many orienteerers learned the hard way that the actual shoreline and the shoreline on the map didn’t quite match. The result? Mud — and lots of it! One competitor was even unlucky enough to lose a shoe in knee-deep mud and was unable to retrieve it. Sounds like a fun day on the lake to me!
In keeping with the usual Canoe-O format, the event was held as a Score-O. Competitors collect as many controls as they can (each worth a different number of points) within a time limit of an hour and a half. Every minute they were late cost them one point off of the final score. The scores below reflect the final scores after the deductions were made. Of course, your score only counts if you’re in a competitive state of mind. Several teams opted for a leisurely paddle across the lake and an amble through the woods to pick up a few controls. Not everyone can be “die-hard” like Walter, who went for a swim on purpose just to save time. That’s three years in row he has won. Someone has to stop him next year!
Thanks again to Kevin and Woody of the Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec for providing the boats, paddles and PFD’s. They brought us all the boats they had and it still wasn't enough since we were still forced to go to a wait list. Next year B.Y.O.B if you can! (bring your own boat) I especially need to thank my wife Tadance for helping keeping time and score during the meet Also thanks to my mom Jeanie for signing teams in and Walter and David for helping pick up controls. They all saved me TONS of time. If any new members of the club are looking to help out, picking up controls will ALWAYS make the meet director happy.
