Local Orienteers have been lucky this year, as all of our local meets have seen great weather.  Our luck ran out Saturday morning when overcast skies gave way to a steady, light rain.  About 10:30 AM, the first runners were greeted by wet, green leaves slapping them in the face as they ran into the woods.  Even with the rain, turnout was good with almost 50 people on the course.

This meet was a Score-O, which requires more skills than a regular meet.  In a Score-O, the controls are assigned point values.  The farther or more difficult controls have higher values.  Also, there is a time limit with a stiff 2 points per minute penalty if you exceed the limit.  You decide which controls to visit and in what order.  The highest score wins.  As you can tell by the results, a little overtime can quickly erode hard won points.  Keeping track of time during the run, and route planning before starting out, are very important.  Planning your route with several options for adding or dropping controls at the end helps to optimize time.  Several people did very well with this, as they finished right at the time limit.  This meet had two different time limit options, 75 minutes and 120 minutes.  There were 24 controls with a maximum possible score of 136.  Only one person got all the controls and no penalty points.  Congratulations, Josef!
