  Into the Pit at Latta

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 6-Jan-2007 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

Fortunately we had a break in the rainy weather and meet day was sunny and warm.  The 143 participants included our usual mix of experienced orienteerers, JROTC members , Scouts and those still learning the sport..  It was good to see more adventure racers, and women, than usual.  We’ve had more participants in previous years; maybe the preceding days’ rain discouraged some people.  Those who didn’t come missed a beautiful day out in the woods

Thank you, Josef Trzicky, for setting the six (!) great courses.  I’m sorry, but I forgot to record the distances*.  Check out the fierce competition on the yellow course, where several places were determined by just seconds.  The most-discussed control feature was the two knolls at the bottom of a huge hole; it was easy to see who took the shortest route, by the mud on the seat of their pants.

Thanks to Charlie, Tandace and Josef for timing, Walter for instructing, Josef, Walter and David for picking up control flags, and to anyone else I’ve neglected to thank.  It takes a lot of volunteers to set up and take down the courses, register participants, instruct, answer questions, and time the runners efficiently.

*Webmaster’s Note:  Runners who have the distances recorded for their course, please send them to me at Webmaster's email address. and I’ll fill them in. Thanks!
