Crowders Mountain State Park | 21-Oct-2006 | James Sisk, meet director.
The COK may have set a record for a local meet – 197 participants! And what a day for that throng to come out and enjoy pristine orienteering weather and some rather daunting terrain. All-in-all it was an extremely good day for orienteering. With both the white and yellow courses, control locations strayed a bit from USOF standards so that folks could stretch their navigational skills a little and get more accustomed to using their compass. Orange course participants had several route selections (all of which required them to climb, climb, & climb). For orange course runners you should remember an essential skill to hone is using ATTACK POINTS and CATCH FEATURES. If you’re unsure how to implement these tactics just ask a seasoned pro at the next meet.
Green course runners were not pleasantly surprised to find nearly all thickets within the park (did the course setter do this on purpose? Of course he did). Unlike former Presidents, I’d like to come clean and make a gesture of contrition. There was a misplaced control on the Green course. Namely, control #7 was off by about 25 meters. I can’t blame it on a vast right (or left) wing conspiracy and I doubt seriously that zombies moved it (although a few do inhabit the park). I can only blame myself. Therefore, anyone who missed that control can get time credit at their next meet. Just check with the time keeper and ask them to subtract 20 minutes from your time…..
Webmasters Note: Yeah, ri-i-ight. We can anticipate an icy wind from Dante's Inferno at about the same time. (In other news: Look! A flying pork chop!)
Much appreciation to David A., Dick D., Don C., Bill K., and the park rangers of Crowders Mountain for their support. Speaking of support, our venerable President mentioned in our annual meeting that the number of participants is growing, but the number of people helping to run meets is diminishing. Please consider becoming more involved with the COK. There are many roles that do not take up a lot of time & effort; and the club never refuses help whatsoever! You can contact David Alexander to find out how you (or your organization) may be able to help keep orienteering alive and strong in the greater Charlotte region.
And on a final note – thanks to Pam & David Alexander for a wonderful BBQ picnic and a great annual membership meeting. See you in the woods.
