Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 30-Sept-2006 | Charlie Martz, meet director.
Our annual Canoe-O was bigger and better than ever this year. With more boats on the water and many more controls spread all over the lake, there were challenges for the beginners and the veterans. The
weather was as perfect as it gets in late September and the water temperature may even have been warmer than the air temperature. A few adventurers like Dan Davis should know first hand. He even went in so far that he lost his hat temporarily. It was a Canoe-O, not a Swim-O, Dan!
Since the object was to collect the most points, strategy was far more important at this meet versus a regular meet. There were some tough decisions to be made about which controls to hit, how much paddling to do and how much running to do. With a 1 point per minute penalty for coming back late, keeping an eye on the time was important. The hard core racers did a lot more running and were able to bag more points than those who stayed in the boats. Two groups were even brave (or foolish) enough to try portaging their boats across the peninsula. Those canoes get heavy, don't they! At the end of the day even the novice orienteerers were able to find controls and have a great day on the water.
Thanks again to Woody Woodward of the Mecklenburg County Parks and Rec. for providing the boats, paddles and PFD’s. He brought us all the boats he had and it still wasn't enough. Next year B.Y.O.B if you can! (bring your own boat) I especially need to thank my wife Tadance for helping to put out the controls and keeping time and score during the meet. (Don't try and put out controls in the dark; it's not easy!) Also thanks to my mom Jeanie for signing teams in and Ian, Walter, David and Pam for helping pick up controls. They all saved me TONS of time. If any new members of the club are looking to help out, picking up controls will ALWAYS make the meet director happy.
