  National Orienteering Day

Reedy Creek Nature Preserve| 16-Sept-2006 | David Alexander, meet director.

This year’s National Orienteering Day (NOD) meet was a big success. Reedy Creek Park & Nature Preserve is an ideal location for this promotional event. There is an extensive trail system and many athletic fields and other features which make great beginner and intermediate level orienteering. The park’s close proximity to the city of Charlotte means lots of local people to draw from. The turn out was really good with many Scouts and JROTC. We had a total of 182 participants, with the majority doing the Yellow course. The weather was great with pleasant temperatures and lots of sunshine.

We did have a problem with disappearing controls. One control disappeared a second time after being replaced earlier in the day! Fortunately no one seamed too upset and everyone had a good time. Congratulations to several members of BSA Troop 167 who received compasses, and to a couple of students from Brevard College who received promotional items donated by Brunton and the United States Orienteering Federation.
