Lake Crawford
Kings Mountain State Park| 4-Mar-2006 | Dan Davis, meet director.
[ Split results on Green and Red courses ]
The world environment does appear to be changing. You can argue about global warming but
when I am Meet Director at Lake Crawford and it doesn't rain that says something odd is taking
place.
It was a great day for orienteering and we had an extra large turnout, especially since we were
hosting the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system JROTC championship. Since each JROTC
team consisted of 4 people, we had quite a number of runners in the woods, especially on
Orange.
Five courses were set consisting of White, Yellow, Orange, Green and Red. Red and Green were
set up for e-punch and the courses were designed to develop long distance leg skills. The
feedback that I got was mostly positive.
Considering that the attendance was on par with an A Meet, I felt that things went smoothly and
that is largely due to the assistance that I had from other members of the club. In fact, so many
turned out to help that I run the risk of not mentioning everyone. Ian Prince, David Alexander,
Bill Ketring, Charlie Martz, Allmuth Perzel all were ready to help with instruction. John Fairley
was a big help in getting in controls. James Sisk had the e-punch system humming along. Howell
Peterson did the registration, an especially daunting task with this many people. Rob Christian
spent a day in the woods laying out the Orange course. Oh, and one other, my Assistant Meet
Director, Don Christensen, who, at last count, had spent three days in the woods helping me set
up all the courses other than Orange. In fact, Don and Howell were back after the event to bring
in more controls, stands, and e-boxes. It's good to know retired people as an event of this
magnitude requires around 14 man-days to put on.
Be sure and check results on Red. We have some really interesting club competition going on.
Too bad Walter Siegenthaler and Jim Hall were not able to be there.
