Ya Seen One Gully, Ya Seen ’em All

Reedy Creek Nature Preserve | 4-Feb-2006 | Sandy Kohn, meet director.

The day started off a bit overcast but warm. There were a number of JR. ROTC units, the orienteering class from CPCC, and many scouts, many of whom arrived early. The first groups started out at 9:45 and by 12:30 we had sent out 178 people in 88 groups. At around 12:45, there was a heavy downpour, and though 43 groups had already completed their courses, about half the groups got wet. The rain only lasted about an hour, and the sun reappeared in time for the control pick ups.

I set 4 courses and I used a different start site than normal. The meet started at the first large shelter on the left after entering the park. Each course was significantly more difficult than the next easier one.

White was fairly easy. No one seemed to have much problem with it, and the fastest time was 18 minutes - the slowest was just over 70 minutes. It was almost entirely along trails so the only challenge was keeping track of which forks to take.

Yellow was quite different than normal. Most of it was NOT along trails. Rather I used creeks as the primary handrails. This meant those on Yellow were hiking off trail through the woods. There were a couple of short legs that required simple compass bearings. Of the 28 starts, only 2 did not finish. Control # 8 (at the fork of two dry ditches) provided some challenge for people. The easiest approach was up the gully that led right to the flag. A few people said they really liked the opportunity to be away from trails and to really have to focus on their map and compass skills.

Orange was quite a bit harder. Of the 30 starts, 16 did not finish. Control # 4 seemed to be one of the hard spots. Many people had to search around for it.

Green was long and quite challenging. Of the 12 starts, only 3 completed it. Part of the problem may have been that control number 5 was in a gully that may have been the wrong gully. It may have been in the next one over (about 10 meters) from where it was shown on the map. Josef, who had the best time on Green and who did most of the field checking for this map, moved it from where I placed it to where he thought it belonged at around 12:00. When I picked up the control on Sunday, I was still not convinced it had been in the wrong place. But Josef has much more experience than I, so I suppose he was right.

A few of the DNFs (Did Not Finish) were due to the rain and the destruction of maps from getting wet and falling apart. Plastic bags were available to place maps in. It didn't really look like it was going to rain early on so many people forwent taking a plastic bag. In the future, I would recommend taking one if here is any chance of rain.

Thanks to Sarah Fox, Danny Wilson, Thomas, Roehm, Megan Crum and the others from Sarah's Wilderness Trip Leading class (from UNCC) who helped with registration. To John Fairley and David Alexander who taught beginner lessons. And to James Sisk who helped pick up controls.
