  Martz Family at Latta

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 07-Jan-2006 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

It was 22°F in the morning and “warmed up” to the mid-40s, but that didn’t stop 197 intrepid participants from venturing into the woods! We had our usual mix of all ages, and levels of experience. There were many Boy Scout and JROTC groups, and even the Navy Reserves. Zak, Trevor and Jeffrey from Troop 118 helped at the meet for one of their orienteering badge requirements. Amber Callahan (age 11, my granddaughter) ran her first course by herself.

Thanks to Charles and Linda at Latta, who supplied us with extension cord electricity, we were able to start from a new location and have some interesting courses, I thought. It must have been very crowded out there, especially on the Orange course. I didn’t hear about any problems except a punch which unfortunately broke and then disappeared. The electronic punching on Green and Red worked great. I know that three of you were helping me, but I wish we had had more Red runners.

A big thank you to Charlie Martz (my son) for timing, putting out e-punch stands and units, and picking up some, with their flags. Thanks to Bill Ketring for programming the units and manning the computer. Thank you to David Alexander for picking up some units, stands and flags. And lots of thanks to Bill, David and John Fairley for instructing many groups of new orienteerers; you must have done a great job because no one got lost!

I need to retire from setting courses, but would be happy to help anyone who wants to give it a try. Just pick your favorite park, review the course-setting guidelines and draw your courses; of course that’s the easy part. But you do improve your skills because you’re looking at a map, and the woods, with a different perspective. And…you can just smile when a runner gasps how difficult a course was. Help your Klubb – be a meet director!
