  Long Courses at Camp York

Another great day for Orienteering. The weather was just beautiful, a bit cool, and brisk in the morning with plenty of sunshine throughout the day and warming to the low 70’s by mid afternoon. A whole bunch of people came out to enjoy the day as you can see by the result list. We had 148 competitors out on the course for the Klubb. And if you were out in the woods then you saw some of the more than 300 JROTC cadets who were using the courses for their own competition.

As for the courses, anyone who has done one of my courses knows that I set rather long courses and this time was no exception. The Orange was 4.7 km (2.82 miles), which may be why there were so many DNFs (Did Not Finish) on that course. The RED course was 7.46 km (4.5 miles) and the GREEN was 6.4 km (3.8 miles) with a common control # 8/6, the rootstock on the hilltop. It seemed to give some trouble, but enough found it so I didn’t get too much flack for where it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, to route the JROTC back to their finish, I had to give the COK competitors a long uphill finish leg.

If you don’t see your name in the results or if you see "No start time", then you didn’t check in with the timekeeper. Please be sure that the timekeeper records your full name before heading out into the woods. And please check back in with the timekeeper after coming back out of the woods, even if you don’t finish the course. We like to double-check at the end of the day to make sure no one is lost or still out on a course.

I would like to extend a special thanks to my support staff for helping with such a large turnout of people:  Barbara Scruggs with registration, time keeping, and control pick-up; Jeanie Martz for registration and time keeping; and James Sisk and Ken Hanson for control pick-up. Yes, you saw the last name correctly, Ken is from Durham, NC, and yet he VOLUNTEERED to help with control pick-up. Where are our Klubb members?
