  Line-O

Renaissance Park | 04-Jun-2005 | John Fairley, meet director.

The sun, missing all week, arrived just in time for our final meet of the season, a Line O at Renaissance Park. For those who are unfamiliar with Line Orienteering, it is almost a reverse of the normal orienteering meet. In Line O you follow a designated, marked route, and the controls are not pre-marked on your map. Instead when you encounter a control on your designated route, you mark on your map where you believe the control to be. It's good practice for keeping in touch with your map and knowing where you are on the map. This is an event and training exercise that I learned from our good friend from Russia, Georgy Kuntsevitch, who made many of our original color maps and who passed away 5 years ago.

I had two courses, a Long Course, which was equivalent to somewhere between an Orange and a Green course, and a Short Course, which was equivalent to a White to Yellow course. The Long Course had 12 controls and the Short Course had 6 controls. I awarded 10 points if your mark was within 5 meters of the actual location, 5 points in your mark was within 5 to 10 meters, and 2 points if within 10 to 15 meters. There was a possible score of 120 on the Long Course and 60 on the Short Course. Time was a secondary factor, only used to break ties.

Thanks to Walter, David and Ken for helping with the meet and picking up controls.
