  Kings Mtn Military

Kings Mountain National Military Park | 07-May-2005 | Walter Siegenthaler, meet director.

This was the last of our regular meets for this season. KM National Military Park is the one area we use for orienteering with the most open woods, but all the leaves were out already and the visibility was reduced considerably. I put the first control stands out 3 weeks before the meet and at that time the woods were still wide open. What a difference a few weeks make. The weather was beautiful, already a bit on the warm side for the competitors. Turn out was good with 156 participants, many of them Scouts.

We used a “new” map, consisting of the original map south of Park Road and the western part of the Lake Crawford map north of Park Road. Then I printed the map at 1:10000 which made it a lot easier for the beginners as well as for the older folks. Having all of our maps in digital form allows us to do things like that without too much of an effort. What a difference from the black & white maps we still used 15 years ago!

I took a different approach this time to design the Green and Red course. I started out with a challenging leg in the middle of the woods which was 1.25 K. Then I designed the rest of the course in front and after the “monster leg”. There was lots of talk about the “monster leg” already before the hot shots started. It was obvious that this leg offered different route choices and even with studying it before the start it was not clear which one would be the fastest. Well, this is how a good orienteering leg should be designed, and I think I succeeded. Since we used E-punching, it was easy to compare the times for the different routes. Joseph was 2 ½ minutes faster than anybody else on this leg, but then there were several competitors within about a minute even as they took different routes. This leg was definitely the talk of the day. Once the splits are posted on the website you can check it out yourself. The “monster leg” was from control #4 to # 5 on Green and Red.

A big Thank you to all the helpers: Rob Christian, control hanging; John Fairly, registration; Dan Davis, instructions; James Sisk and Bill Ketring, E-punch operation; David Alexander, instruction and control pick-up; Jim Hall, Ken Hanson and Terese Camp, control pick-up. THANK YOU !
