  Lake Crawford

Kings Mountain State Park | 05-Mar-2005 | Dan Davis, meet director.

The March Meet on the Lake Crawford map was noteworthy in one sense of the word in that it was the first meet that I’ve directed on that map that was not wet and cold. In fact, when I was talking with the Chief Ranger, Frank Couch, a couple of weeks prior to the meet, he indicated that he would be sure and have his poncho handy for that day. Other than a few drops here and there, we had a beautiful, pleasant day for orienteering. Our turn-out was very good and, it appears, the courses were well received.

The White and Yellow courses were fairly short but these two courses are somewhat difficult to set up at Lake Crawford. Even so, the participants on those two courses seemed to enjoy them. Orange was set up as an e-punch course. It too, was shorter than recommended guidelines but due to the hilly terrain, I felt that this was the better approach. Red and Green featured long legs. I did this to add the required difficulty to these two advanced courses as the terrain on the Lake Crawford map is not complex.

A number of you volunteered to help with various task and I hesitate to try to mention all the names as I might leave someone out. However, I do want recognize those that made up the official team for this meet starting with my Assistant Meet Director, Don Christensen who spent many hours and walked many miles in laying out and setting the courses. Howell Peterson and John Fairley were also part of the set-up team. On hand Saturday were Arnold Willen and James Sisk to handle the e-punch duties and Al Rodgers for Start/Finish. Several helped pick up controls on Saturday afternoon and I’m especially grateful to the Tafts who returned on Sunday to get the really far in the boonies controls.
