  Kickin’ Off the New Year

Latta Plantation Park & Nature Preserve | 08-Jan-2005 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

In spite of overcast skies we had 158 enthusiastic participants. As usual, the orienteers included those new to the sport, Boy Scout troops, ROTC groups and high-ranking national competitors. Fortunately for us, Asheville doesn’t have an O club, so we had several visitors from that area.

We had optional e-punching on Red and Green and 27 runners took advantage of it. Orange was the most popular course with 56 participants; Yellow had 47. Two couples who ran White for the first time enjoyed it so much, they went back out on Yellow, and had very good times.

It was good to hear that all the controls were in the correct places and everyone seemed to have an enjoyable day. But I think the courses were too easy; I’ll try to be more devious next year… maybe a creek crossing… .

Thanks to Charlie who put out some e-units, did timing and picked up some controls; to James and David who picked up a lot of controls; to the e-punch computer team; and to Bill who programmed the e-units and did a lot of instructing.
