  Wind Walkers

Crowder’s Mountain State Park | 16-OCT-2004 | James Sisk, meet director.

You couldn’t ask for a better day to orienteer! Just ask the 96 participants who braved the wind (Park Rangers notified me that one gust was 40mph), but nevertheless enjoyed the crisp Fall weather and some rather challenging courses. In trying to keep with USOF standards for course design, I came up with only three courses to offer. However, all three could be considered an “ordeal” for most runners. The attempt was to place controls where participants could choose more than one route and make some tough navigational decisions. This was especially proper for the Green course since more experienced people like to put their skills to practice and learn (albeit unfortunately) from their mistakes.

A big shout out to the Park Rangers is in order. They were especially accommodating by providing tables and advice. Rob Christian, David Alexander, and Bill Ketring are great volunteers and should be thanked for their help as well. Even though placing the electronic controls out in the woods takes a little more logistics, e-punching seems to working just fine and participants are well satisfied and confident with it. The club will continue to refine the electronic management of future meets. I would like to encourage everyone who enjoys the sport of orienteering to consider an active participation with the club and to recruit new members. We can survive only with lots of enthusiastic support. See you in the woods!
