  Weather Forecasts All Wrong

Reedy Creek Park & Nature Preserve | 18-SEP-2004 | Walter Siegenthaler, meet director.

Boy, oh boy, can the weather forecasters be wrong. With the remains of Hurricane Ivan in the area the weather didn’t look good at all on Friday. At lunch time the forecast was still calling for rain for the whole weekend, but what could I do, I still had to go out and set the controls. Yes, I got wet but the temperature was warm enough to keep me warm. After all the preparations were completed and I was ready to go to bed, I checked the hourly forecast on the Weather Channel. To my surprise there was no more rain predicted after 9:00 am, and that would be just perfect for the first starts.

While driving to the park on Saturday morning early to go and set the last controls, the sun was already out and it turned out to be a perfect day to be out in the woods.

I set the usual White, Yellow and Orange courses. In addition, I wanted to have something ready for the advanced runners but at this time of the year the woods at Reedy Creek are still quite thick and it is not much fun to run through all the thickets. I therefore decided to take the Orange course and add a few more controls to it, with difficulties between Orange and Green. So what do you get when you mix Orange and Green? I wasn’t really sure, so I called it Purple. It ended up to be 5.5 K long with 17 controls, definitely enough of a challenge for the people that showed up, the winning time was 2 hours 22 minutes.

This event was part of the National Orienteering Day (NOD), with more than 50 events, mainly geared towards beginners, held across the US. Considering the misleading weather forecast, our turnout was good, we had about 90 people participating and I guess about one third of them were beginners. BRUNTON, a compass manufacturer, and MAPTECH, the manufacturer of the Terrain Navigator Software, are sponsors of the NOD event. Unfortunately, the prizes to give away (4 compasses and 1 Terrain Navigator Software) didn’t arrive on time to give them out at the event, but they will be sent to the winners.

Many thanks to Keith Liscinsky, Bill Ketring, Charles McComas and David Alexander for helping to run the meet, with such qualified helpers it is a breeze to be meet director.
