Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 11-SEP-2004 | Charlie Martz, meet director.

Despite a beautiful sunny day and very mild temperatures for early September, a certain hurricane named Frances denied us our traditional Canoe-O kick-off to the season. With the water level of Mountain Island Lake up about 4 to 5 feet above full pond, all of my original control points were now underwater. Plus the Park wasn't going to let us use their canoes in the flooded lake anyway, so we had to make do with an improvised land Score-O instead.

The emergency course was about a 4.5 km long score-O and was in a ROGAIN format, meaning that competitors could get the controls in any order and each control was worth a different point value. The catch, which was all too painful to some (James, where are you??), was that the competitors only had one hour to get as many as they could. After the hour they were penalized one point per minute over time. I want to especially thank my mom, Jeanie Martz, for helping me to plan and set the course at the last minute. Although given her placement of controls deep in the dark green, briar infested terrain just off of overgrown trails, I think most competitors would rather she hadn't helped.

I also want to thank all of the competitors for knocking down the big nasty spider webs that seemed to be EVERYWHERE. It really make the control pick-up a lot more enjoyable. And for the most important thank-you of all, THE FOOD!!! For those who don't come to the club Cook-Out, man are you missing out!! Barbara and Bill must have raided every grocery store around to bring so much food! And also thanks to the ROTC leader who did most of the grunt work over the grill. Maybe the hurricane gods will spare us next year and we can get back on the water.
