  Canoe-O & Membership Meeting

Latta Plantation / Mountain Island Lake | 6-Sep-2003 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

The "BEST EVER" is the only way to describe the turnout for this year's Canoe-O and annual picnic. Fourteen teams went out on the water and a bunch of Klubbers stayed around for the picnic. We had a very nice day for spending a couple of hours out on the lake. The Canoe-O was of a Score-O format with a two-hour time limit and a hefty one point per minute penalty for being late. The event utilized both the north and south shorelines nearest the canoe put-in. Most of the controls were considered "Dry" where you had to get out of your boat and go inland to punch the control. Only two or three (if you are tall) were "Wet" controls, reachable from your boat. Our weather for the day was a mild temperature with a slight overcast. Plenty of food at the picnic for all to enjoy and a very informative membership meeting that followed.

A special congratulations to Dan Davis and Walter Siegenthaler for a perfect score of 70 points. These two fellows got all 24 controls. But then what would one expect from a team that was stacked with such a level of experience. Next year I want to be on their team. (Webmaster's Note: Next year, I unleash my minisub.)

Special thanks to Barbara Scruggs for her help with putting together the Klubb's annual membership picnic AND handling the registration for the Canoe-O. Also an extra thank you to Walter Siegenthaler for his help with control pick-up. This means he paddled for another hour AFTER doing the course. If you have never been a meet director you can't appreciate what great help control pick-up is. Thanks to Arnold Willen for manning the grill at the picnic.

Volunteer and help your Klubb!

  National Orienteering Day

Reedy Creek Park and Nature Preserve | 20-SEP-2003 | Walter Siegenthaler, meet director.

Lucky us, Hurricane Isabel passed Charlotte far enough to the east, two days before our event, so that there was no damage in the Charlotte area. The weather on Saturday was great, lots of sunshine with temperatures in the mid 80's, a little on the warm side for orienteering. Thanks to several of the JROTC units who came out to get some training in for the Blue Ridge Championship in November, we had a total of about 75 people participating. Quite a number of them enjoyed themselves so much that they went out on a second course. It was nice to see so many smiling faces and I'm sure we will see some of them again at other meets.

Despite of the nice weather, mother nature had did have a few challenges ready for us. The spider webs were quite annoying, especially when you went off trails. Then there were an unusual number of bees out there, especially around control #2 on the White course. Several participants got stung and came back to the start to report it and get treatment. We went out and moved the control a bit closer to the trail, which seemed to get us out of the bee territory. By far the most serious incident was a JROTC student bitten by a copperhead. It did not happen out on the course, but next to a trash can near the restroom building, an area where many non-orienteering people walked around too. Luckily the hospital is only 10 minutes away from Reedy Creek, so that professional treatment was provided within a short time. The initial report was that the boy is doing well and we all wish him the best. It is rather seldom that somebody gets bitten by a snake during an orienteering meet. I have been orienteering for many years in many different parts of the country and this is the first time that somebody got bitten by a snake. However, it is a reminder that there are some dangers out in nature and that we have to be prepared for emergencies like that.

Since it was National Orienteering Day, we has some Brunton compasses and Maptech CD's to give away. The winners of the compasses were: Jake Wetzel of Montreat, NC and Jordan Maesalu of Matthews, NC. The CD's went to David Alexander of Charlotte, NC and Rick Vogel of Simpsonville, SC. Thanks to Brunton and Maptech for sponsoring NOD.

Many thanks to the following people for helping run this event: Phyllis Tarrant - registration; Bill Ketring - instruction, time keeping and control pick-up; David Alexander - time keeping and control pick-up; Barbara Scruggs - general help and control pick-up.

  Orienteering by the Bus Load

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve| 4-Oct-2003 | Leslie and Ken Carlson, meet directors.

The weather was as close to perfect as it comes. The ROTC kids came in by the bus loads, we are talking 4-5 BUS LOADS!! Everyone seemed to have a good time and spent LOTS of time in the woods. You can imagine how long it takes 3 and 4 teenagers in a group to navigate a course.

Participants on the green course also spent a long time in the woods, alas this was my fault since the 7th control was in the wrong place. Most spent the time to find it since that's where the water was! My humble apologies to these hardy orienteers. Because there was really no competition involved on this course I am not posting times, all participants tied for FIRST PLACE!!

A special thanks to Blair and Arlene Peery for helping to pick up the controls!

  Camp York

Kings Mtn State Park | 8-Nov-2003 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

We had good weather, a good turnout, some good finish times, and a good day of Orienteering. The weather was overcast and in the upper fifties, which was just about right for a hike in the woods. A large number of Orienteers (100+) showed up for this event, along with about another 400+ JROTC people. (Not to be confused with the JROTC that participated with the Klubb). This meet was in conjunction with the Blue Ridge JROTC Championships event. Even though we had separate start and finish places, the Klubb and the JROTC used the same courses. Sorry folks, but I wasn't about to set separate courses. As it was, I set out forty controls. There were a lot of lost souls (JROTC) wandering in the woods so I hope all of our Klubb members took the time to help guide them along their way. I know a lot of them showed up at the Klubb's start point and needed some quick help to find their way back on course.

As to the confusion on the Green and Red course for where the finish point was, all I can say is, 'You all had a map and compass which showed the finish to be where you started' and NOT the Blue Ridge Championships chute finish. And yes it was a LONG uphill leg to the finish.

I would like to thank my event crew, without whose help the meet would not have run so smoothly. Thanks to Barbara Scruggs for taking care of registration and David Alexander for Q & A. Special thanks to all of the volunteers who helped pick up controls, David Staudacher and the group from Raleigh for picking up the yellow course, Barbara Scruggs for picking up the white course, and Walter Siegenthaler and David Alexander for helping me with all the rest.

Volunteer and help your Klubb with an event!

  Electronic-Punch Trial

McDowell Nature Preserve & Park | 6-Dec-2003 | James Sisk, meet director.

[Go to Split Times Results]

What a great turnout for this month's meet! We had 70 participants, many of whom got to be guinea pigs for our latest endeavor — electronic punching (please note:  no animal product testing was used). Yes, the COK is now well into the 21st century with our new computerized timing system. Using "coded finger sticks" and "electronic controls," we now have the capability to record start, stop, elapsed and split times. This new feature for the COK replaces the stubby pencil method of figuring out times, ensures accuracy, and reduces the need to manually punch at a control.

Our beta test with this new technology was an overwhelming success due to a great, well compensated e-punch committee. Tremendous amounts of kudos are in order for Arnold Willen, Bill Ketring, & Walter Siegenthaler for their time and effort with e-punching. There was lots of behind the scenes work in preparation for this meet and it showed! You'll see more e-punching this season since the COK intends to use it for our sponsorship of next year's A-meet (June 26-28).

We should also thank Patricia Poteat of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation Department for her generosity (shelter, electricity, & lavatory) and to David Alexander for picking up controls.

Folks, that last item is really what makes the COK so special. That is, people willing to pitch in and support the club. Teamwork. Volunteering. Participating. That's how we work and that's how we can assure our future success. So, don't be shy — let us know where you think your talents can contribute.

I should also welcome our new members and visitors from out of state. We're glad you joined us and come back soon. See you in the woods.

(Webmaster's Note:  Below are the “manual results”from James Sisk, done in the usual way. Arnold Willen's Split Times results were generated from software connected directly to the e-punch gear. They cover most of the runners on Orange and Red.)

  Happy New Year!

Crowders Mountain State Park | 3-Jan-2003 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

January 3 was unbelievably sunny, dry and 74 degrees, which helped attract lots of old and new orienteerers. There was a wonderful mix of outdoorsy people, from families with babies to word-class competitors.

We had electronic punching on the orange and red courses; it was greatly appreciated by the competitors. Thanks to Arnold Willen and James Sisk for running it smoothly.

Fortunately the controls were all in their correct places and none were stolen, although one was temporarily buried (due to some very unsportsmanlike behavior).

Thank you to Charlie, Tandace, Bill and Walter for helping.

  BUBBA GOAT 2003

King's Mountain State Park | 22-Nov-2003 | Dan Davis, meet director.

Bubba Goat 2003, hosted by the Carolina Orienteering Klubb, took place Saturday, November 22 on the Lake Crawford map at King's Mountain State Park. Although a little on the warm side, the day was sunny without any hint of rain. Although we would have liked to have had a larger turn out, it wasn't too bad with 10 competitors on the Long (~10K) course and 11 individuals and 4 JROTC groups on the short course (~6K). Time limit for Long was 2 ½ hours. Short was 1/1/2 hours. Several Bubbas, complete with bib overall's, competed and were given a 15 minute deduction from their time as those overall's were down right hot during the afternoon run.

JROTC units that came through the viewing area in unit formation, at double time, calling cadence, were also allowed the time deduction. Rather interesting contrast to see an overalled Bubba run through followed by a sharp, precision military formation.

Mikell Platt traveled the longest distance to participate, but Mikell has to return to the Carolina's from time to time to maintain his certification as a true Bubba.

More commentary by GAOC's Sam Smith...

A report about the Bubba Goat from Sam Smith.

We all had a great time running the course in bib overalls!

I had my doubts this year that I would be able to do it. let's see, 10K in 2.5 hours is 15 min/km - I can do that - maybe. Of course I got 15 minutes extra for wearing overalls, but I probably needed 30 to make up for the added weight of sweat soaked denim.

A good crowd showed up - Joey from VOC, Don Davis, the usual COK crowd with Walter and Jim. Dan Davis was the course setter. And a big surprise, Mikell Platt who was visiting his parents. From GAOC, Sean and his dad, Laurie and myself, Steve and Robin. And a whole bunch of ROTC kids.

Mass start so I just followed Mikell without looking at the map much. I thought I would see if I could keep up to #1. I did this once before with Elis Eberlein. Both Elis and Mikell are my age. I couldn't keep up with Elis then, and I couldn't stay with Mikell now! I was OK on the downhill out of the start, then we forded a stream and started uphill under a powerline and he ran away from me. Time to read the map! I figured that was the last I would see of Mikell.

I dropped in, found #1 and punched, and as I was climbing out who should I see coming in but Mikell! He had run by it I guess and looked a little embarassed. OK, I beat Mikell to #1! He quickly ran away from me as we climbed out of that hole on the way to #2. He lead a group of people up, which I thought was too high. I took the more old-man route around. I figured that was the last I would see of Mikell.

I dropped in to #2 and punched, then started climbing out and who should I see coming in but Mikell! He had run by this one too! "Must be the overalls", I said, since Mikell was NOT wearing overalls.

OK, I beat Mikell to the the first 2 controls. Could I manage 3? No way, I managed to run by #3, along with Sean and his dad, and I never saw Mikell again until the finish.

I did manage to time it just right so I finished in time - no more energy expended than needed - knee still connecting the parts of my leg.

Then the real ordeal began, a 2.5 hour meeting about the convention!

  Reedy Creek

Reedy Creek Park | 7-Feb-2004 | Sandy Kohn& Walter Siegenthaler, meet directors.

After all the rain on Friday the weather cleared up and we had a mostly sunny day on Saturday. The ground was still very wet and muddy but most participants didn't mind as long as the sun was out. Sandy Kohn had agreed to be the meet director for this meet about six months ago, but then another, more important, item came up and he was not able to conduct the meet. He still designed the courses and set most of the controls before he had to leave town.

Webmaster's Note:  The “important item” was a poster with Sandy's picture on it...“$500 Wanted for Mischievous Malingering.” Yeah, I'd have left town too, Sandy.

I then met one of Sandy's students early on Saturday morning to receive the maps and the controls that still had to be set. It was somewhat of a strange feeling to be in charge of the meet but have only visited the control locations of the white course before the meet started. Well, everything did work out and I didn't get any complains about controls not being in the right location. Some of them may were not easy to find, but they were in the correct location just may not as well visible as some of the participants expected. We did lose one of the controls on the white course, it must have been stolen after the last white course participants had passed it, but before we got out there to pick it up. What is a person, who most likely does not know anything about orienteering, going to do with an orienteering control??

For the last few years, the February meet at Reedy Creek has always had a good turn out and this year was no exception with 130 people from the club meet and 22 from the CPCC class going out on the courses. We were ready with a big enough meet crew to handle the crowd. A big THANK YOU to the three students from Sandy's Venture Program at UNCC, they handled start and finish all day long and at the end helped with control pick up. Also many thanks to Howell Peterson and Don Christensen for handling registration and several club members who chipped in here and there.

  Camp Grimes

Grimes Boy Scout Camp | 21-Feb-2004 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

We had a good turn out for this event with it being so far from where we are used to Orienteering. A lot of Boy Scouts (it is, after all a Boy Scout Camp) and a LOT of High School ROTC came out for some Orienteering. Mother Nature was very nice to us. The rain held off; in fact it was a very nice day with temps in the mid 60's. However, Mother Nature has not been so nice to the trees at Camp Grimes. As everyone saw on the courses, there has been devastation to the trees (i.e.; cutting down and removal of the trees) because of the Southern Pine Beetle and the drought over the past few years. There seemed to be a lot of DNF's (Did Not Finish). Although, as the regular Klubb members know, I usually set a challenging course, maybe the Orange course was a bit more than some Orienteers are used to. The folks who took on the Green Course found that out as they tried to find Control #7 (the DEEP Reentrant with parallel errors).

Thanks to all of my helpers with putting on this event. David Alexander for Registration and control pick up, Dan Davis for his help with control pick up, and Barbara Scruggs for her general all around help. These meets cannot go on without our Klubb members volunteering, please do your part.

NOW LET ME RAISE MY VOICE SO I HAVE EVERYONE'S ATTENTION. The Klubb has lost a control at its last two events. These controls are NOT souvenirs for your taking. They cost the Klubb money to replace. I would hope that any Boy Scout who is supposed to be honest or any JROTC cadet who is training to be a future Military Leader would NEVER even think of taking a control. The controls that are put out on the course are for ALL Orienteers to use. It makes it VERY frustrating for someone on a course to not be able to find a control when it is missing. I'm sure every one would like the controls in place when they are on the course and so would their fellow Orienteers. PLEASE leave the controls on the courses.

  Lake Crawford

Kings Mountain State Park | 6-Mar-2004 | David Alexander, meet director.

Saturday mourning started out cloudy with a somewhat ominous weather forecast. Fortunately the bad weather never materialized and that afternoon was warm and sunny. We had a big turn out with a lot of Boy Scouts and JROTC kids as well. Altogether there were 83 participants with the Orange course being the most popular. Most competitors did very well with very few DNFs.

The Red and Green courses had e-punch controls and, as usual, the split times results printouts were the subject of much discussion as the competitors compared times and strategies. The e-punch system ran smoothly thanks to the hard work of Arnold Willen who setup the software and hardware. Bill Ketring also helped enter competitors and printed results.

Thanks to the support of the volunteers -- Pam Smith, registration; Michelle Smith, start & finish times; and Bill Ketring, control pick-up -- the event went very smoothly. The amount of work required for a meet is increasing due to the electronic punching. Therefore volunteers to help with setting-up and retrieving equipment from the woods is becoming more important. So please volunteer for an upcoming meet.

Fire on the Mountain: Run, Boys, Run

Kings Mountain National Military Park | 1-May-2004 | Joe Hall, meet director.

I, your volunteer meet director, braved forest fires to set up this meet for you. The Park was doing controlled burning and I actually hiked past a still burning tree to hang a control where my vetting tape had been burnt to a crisp. Fortunately it rained a few times before the meet and settled the ashes. Unfortunately it was raining the morning of the meet. It was warm though and a pleasant time was had by all. The fire cleared some underbrush for the Red course but the foliage was prolific everywhere else. Looking forward to a June A-meet?  Thanks to David and James for your help.
