  Canoe-O at Latta

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve
14-Sep-2002 | John Fairley, meet director.

Saturday, September 14th was overcast, but the threatening rains held off to let us get our Canoe-O event completed. Shame on all of you that didn't come out and take advantage of the use of CPCC's canoes, and you who e-mailed me about coming and didn't show! Those that came had a fun time on Mtn. Island Lake even though the lake level was a little low. One control I had set out by canoe earlier was about 50 feet of mud from the water due to drop of the lake level. Other than that, all the other controls were easily reachable and the lake was clear and the temperature was very comfortable.

Results: (This was a Score-O and point values were to be maximized based on control values, which in turn depended on distance.)

  Crowders Mountain

Crowders Mountain State Park | 5-Oct-2002 |
Walter Siegenthaler, meet director.

The first regular meet of this season brought out a lot of people. We had a total of 130 participants without counting the CPCC orienteering class. We managed to fill up both parking lots and then some. The weather was unusually hot for October, about 85 degrees, which probably had something to do with the long times on some of the courses. I did not expect such a large turn out and I'm sure the water I put out at the controls was gone way before the last participants got there - sorry. Maybe the courses were a bit long and probably on the difficult side, but I feel they were set according to the guidelines of the United States Orienteering Federation (USOF).

There were several participants who completed their course but exceeded the time limit of 3 hours; they are listed in the results as OT (overtime). I like to remind everybody that the time limit on all courses is 3 hours. This is for safety reasons — if you are out there for more than 3 hours we get very concerned and may send out the search crew. Our volunteers are spending a lot of time organizing the meets, and there is no reason to burden them with additional, unnecessary tasks such as searching for somebody that just disregards the time limit. We are perfectly willing to send out the search crews, but this should only have to be done in a real emergency.

Well, I think everybody had a good workout but enjoyed the day in the woods.

A big thank you to Bill Ketring and David Alexander who helped out with registration and instruction, David also helped picking up controls. Also a thank you to James Sisk who used the red course on Sunday for his CPCC class and then picked up these controls.

By the way, there were a few people that showed up with their registration forms in hand, already filled out and ready to go. These are the PDF forms available from our website, and we got some compliments on that and the website in general. Of course, I took the credit for it — just kidding, Blair!

  Morrow Mountain

Morrow Mountain State Park | 9-Nov-2002 | Joe Hall, meet director.

Report: Morrow Mountain is a little far but well worth the drive on a beautiful fall day. The weather was perfect, sunny, high 60's. The leaves were at their peak colors. The red competitors had a couple of mountain top vistas on their course, for which they expressed their thanks. I tried to emphasize route choice when I laid out the course. Quizzing returning competitors about their attack points I found more solutions than I thought possible. The orange and yellow were a little on the hard side, but people handled them well.

Walter and company simultaneously did a two day ROTC training and meet. They got a little wet on Sunday. Thanks for your help Bill, James, Dan and Mary.

  The Ice Storm Cometh

McDowell Park | 7-Dec-2002 | James Sisk, meet director.

December's O-meet at McDowell Nature Preserve and Park would've been fantastic with beautiful blue skies, cool temperatures, and four great courses. Alas, we were forced to cancel by the Mecklenburg Parks & Recreation Department due to their concern with public safety and liability. Wouldn't you know that I had ONE control left to hang (out of 20) when I got the sad news from a park ranger that the park would be closed December 7th due to the ice storm.

However, kudos to the Parks & Recreation Department (especially Woody) for their support of the Klubb and quick response in getting the parks ship shape again after much damage along the trails. I took up the controls and there are some "World War I battlefield looking" areas with hanging branches and downed trees that are a little precarious. Mother Nature still rules, but hopefully Latta Plantation will be open for the January 4th meet.

Happy Holidays!

We had a great turn out on a cool, sunny day. The green and red courses ventured out into the newly mapped area, which was challenging for us all, except Josef. Early green and red competitors lost time looking for control 5/7 which had been stolen; thank you Walter for putting out a replacement. Thanks to Tyson Badders who helped set the white course for his Boy Scout O badge. Also, thank you to Bill for his always excellent instruction, to Leslie and Ken for picking up the white controls, to Charlie for picking up the red, and timing, and to Marek from Park and Rec. for separating us from the horse show people.

  February Blowout

Reedy Creek Park | 1-Feb-2003 | Sandy Kohn, meet director.

On February 1, we had a great turnout with over 205 participants including over a dozen each from: the UNCC Venture Programs, some Junior ROTC groups and scouts. According to the written records, our oldest orienteer was 66 and the youngest a two year old who accompanied mom and dad and 3 older siblings. We sold 115 maps, with many people sharing maps in small groups. Most everyone did well. The 50 degrees temperatures and crystal clear sky made it a wonderful days to be out in the woods. Thanks to Dan and Walter for teaching lessons and to UNCC Venture staff Kate, Shane and Don who volunteered their time and helped with set up, registration, starts, and picking up some controls.

Since Reedy Creek park is relatively small and since we get lots of first timers, I focused my energy on the easier courses. The white course was longer than normal, but entirely on trails. Those on white had to pay special attention when going by the Environment Center to make sure they got on the right path to control # 9. The yellow course took people off trails (unlike white), but provided a good handrail with a big valley and a series of close together controls to provide success. Unfortunately the control just before going off trail was moved by someone (see below) which threw a few people off. The orange course offered a major challenge to get to #3. One had to pay careful attention to gentle topography changes to identify the reentrant just past the control. And if they went much too far, they came to a farm so they knew they had missed it. Control # 4 was also a challenge but well worth seeing since it was on a ridge top with over a dozen deep pits. I've often wondered how those pits got there.

There were some unexpected challenges for this meet. Control number 6 on the White Course and 8 on the Yellow course were the same- labeled AZ. It was originally placed right next to the earth and stone wall at the curve of a trail. It was literally right next to the trail at the curve. I heard reports that it wasn't there but that with some searching, many had found it. When I went to pick up the controls, I found it at least 100 feet northeast from where I had placed it. That means someone moved it. This seems to have been a prank. One that probably confused a lot of people.

For the red course. I inadvertently placed control number 3 at the wrong pit. I fell prone to the old parallel reentrant error. I thought something didn't seem quite right after I had left it, but didn't stop to really analyze my doubt and figure out what was wrong. I apologize for the mistake.

Red course runners also encountered a control placed in a dark green (fight) vegetation area. It was so dense that you couldn't see more than 20 feet or so. That makes the orienteering based too much on luck. Walter set me straight. I won't do that again. Despite these problems, it seems that everyone had a great time and I heard lots of excited talk about how satisfying it is to orienteer.

-Sandy Kohn

  Great Turnout

Kings Mtn National Mil. Park | 1-Mar-2003 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

What a great turnout we had for this event. Lots of JROTCs, the group of students from C.P.C.C. and lots of first timers. The weather was good Orienteering weather, a bit cool and overcast. That is, it was good for the early starters. Anyone who was in the woods after about 2:00 pm got a good drenching. So the moral is, "don't start late". This park is hard to set a white course due to the lack of short trails near the start/finish point, however all competitors seamed to enjoy it. The orange course may have had a difficult control or two for its level, but reviewing the results, the controls were obtainable. The green course was of typical length and difficulty. I would like to congratulate all of the red course participants of a job well done. It was a LONG red course, still within the guidelines, but pushing the upper limits. Way to go red course guys.

As always these events are put on by our Klubb members volunteering their time and efforts. Thank you to Barbara Scruggs for an outstanding job handling the massive amount of registration that took place on site. (Note: This confusion can be cut down by downloading from our web sit and filling out a registration form BEFORE coming to the meet.) Also thanks to Al Rodgers for being unexpectedly volunteering for time keeping duties. As always, Dan Davis: thanks for helping with instruction. And a special thanks to Jim Sisk for help with control pick up.

We'll see you all at the “Battle of Kings Mountain” A-meet.

  Life After the Battle

Reedy Creek Park | 3-May-2003 | Bill Ketring, meet director.

What a beautiful day to be out hiking through the woods. I don't know where everyone was, but you missed a good day of orienteering, with clear skies and a mild temperature. I know what you all were thinking, "Reedy Creek, overgrown and briers to trudge through, not me, not today". But to those who did come out to play, they were rewarded with courses that stayed along the trails. There was a busy white course with ten controls. A yellow course with 14 controls that went off the trails a little but not much. It was a good beginners level course with lots of backstops and catching fixtures along the way. And for the more experienced Orienteers there were two Line-O courses.

For those of you who are not familiar with Line-O's, the object is to follow a course/trail/line that is outlined on the map and you have to mark your map where the controls are along the line. Then when you return, your map is checked for accuracy. A very good map reading and pace counting exercise. Those who went out on the Line-O's all did very well or maybe I'm just too lenient on checking the maps. Anyway, thank you to those who tried my Line-O.

I would like to say sorry to the Air Force group from Greenville, SC for not having a clear understanding of the procedure for checking out and in and getting your times posted. You'll know how to do it next time.

Thank you to the Klubb members who gave me a hand in putting on this event. Don Christensen for his help with setting out controls, pick up and general crowd control. David Alexander for setting controls, pick up and time keeping. While most everyone was still enjoying their morning coffee, these two guys met me at the park at 7:30 in the morning to set controls. Jim Sisk for his help with instruction and pick up. And thank you to Scott Pyle who did a great job with registration. Volunteer and help your Klubb on an event. See you all next season.

  Not National O Day

Latta Plantation Nature Preserve | 4-May-2003 | Blair Peery & Arlene Roman, meet director.

Wow. For an ex-official day, we did better than I would have thought. It was cloudy and threatening to rain pretty much the whole day, although as we were packing up to go home the sun did make a grudging appearance. That didn't stop the flow of happy, smiling folks ready to try their hand at orienteering. Tom Hubbard was so gung-ho he showed up a good 45 minutes before the 1:00 pm opening. Although an experienced outdoorsman and hiker, he had only been to one previous White course, and was ready to learn more about the sport.

This wasn't an ordinary meet. First, there was only one course, a White. Second, it was free. On top of that it was on a Sunday afternoon, the day after a regular Saturday meet at Reedy Creek. In all we had 43 people come out and almost everyone was a first-timer, though some were experienced in related fields such as hiking or extreme racing. What surprised me was that as far as we could tell, nobody "just happened by". In other words, everybody who participated had planned on coming, so our outreach to the impromptu passerby may need rethinking. Even so, I feel that this was a big success for those with lower skill levels to learn at an event dedicated to that segment of the population.

Arlene & I took a section of the Latta Plantation map and blew it up 400% for ease of viewing by new readers, and then expanded the legend even more and hung a couple near our table so we could talk about the map symbols. On the clue sheets I included the international orienteering feature symbols as a way to get everybody familiar with them.

There were ten controls, and we kept them all on the trails or within a few paces off. The features, however, were more mixed. We used a fence, a ditch junction, a man-made object, a vegetation boundary, a boulder, and a ditch/trail juntion, to name a few. Only one control — the 9th — was tricky. Not tricky in itself (it was the ditch/trail junction, and the control was hanging in plain sight at a bridge over the ditch), but the turnoff to get onto that trail was a little hard for beginners to spot from the direction they'd be coming from. But if they miss the turnoff they'll soon come to control # 10, and that's when they must figure it out. The distances are short and the turnoff is very easy to see from the reverse direction. So even on a White course, it's possible to get the feel of some of the interesting thought processes of the more advanced courses.

Now it's someone else's turn to do National Orienteering Day on its new date of September 20th. Volunteers?
