  Crowders Starts the Season

Crowders Mtn State Park | 6-Oct-2001 | Dan Davis, meet director.

It was wet from both the rain and the saturated underbrush and, if you were not running, it was cold. The foliage was thick and the courses were challenging. This combination must have contributed to the scarce turn-out of COK members, but it did not deter the hardy and we ended up with 91 participants. Well done, you hale and hearty ones!

Several members contributed to this event with courses being designed by Charles McComas with Charles, Dan Davis, Howell Peterson, and Don Christensen hanging controls. Howell and Don ran the Registration and Start/Finish. Joe Hall and John Fairley helped with control pick-up.

The surprise of the day was the RETURN OF BILL KETRING !!! Bill has moved back to Charlotte and we are looking forward to having him "O"ing with us again.

  Ouch! DNF-City!

Kings Mtn. State - Camp York | 3-Nov-2001 | Joe Hall, meet director.

It was a beautiful warm (maybe too warm) day with the leaves (maybe too many leaves) at their peak. The brown, green and red courses were all very challenging. A lot of the people who would have enjoyed the challenge were at an A meet or assisting Walter in an ROTC training day. We still had a good turnout with about 50 starts.

(Some late corrections are shown in red. Apologies to Jim Carroll.)

  Latta In the Snow

Latta Plantation | 5-Jan-2002 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

Seventy-two brave participants turned out for orienteering in the snow and mud, and they all seemed to have a good time. Several people even completed two courses.

We had many new orienteerers; thank you to Bill Ketring, Walter Siegenthaler and Dan Davis for instructing. And thanks to my son, Charlie, for hanging the white and yellow controls, putting out the water, timing, and picking up the red controls and water jug (while "running" the course).

Reedy Creek in Charlotte, NC, USA

Reedy Creek Park | 2-Feb-2002 | Sandy Kohn, meet director.

On February 2, 2002 we had a good turnout with over 100 participants, including a dozen or so each from the UNCC Venture Programs, some Junior ROTC groups, and the Scouts. Most everyone did well. The 50 degree temperatures and crystal clear sky made it a wonderful day to be out in the woods. Thanks to Dan Davis and Walter Siegenthaler for teaching lessons and to UNCC students Eric, Brook and Tim who volunteered their time and helped with set up, registration and starts, and picked up some controls.

  Lake Crawford

Kings Mtn State Park | 2-Mar-2002 | Dan Davis, meet director.

OK, COK! So you don’t like to "O" in rainy, cold, hypothermic weather? Have I got a deal for you. Just don’t let me be Meet Director anymore. Two years in a row now and the weather gets worse each time. Better pull me off the list. Next time could bring 12" of snow.

We did, though, have a reasonably good turn-out thanks to the CPCC class and to Paul William’s JROTC unit. However, since there were not too many of the club attending, I may just run this course again in a couple of years as I like the Red and Green courses. Probably tweak it a little.

One of the reasons we did not have many of the COK regulars participating is that several were helpers. I had anticipated a big turn-out and had recruited a good number of helpers. It really makes a Meet go more smoothly for all if there is an abundance of help. Howell Peterson helped me set out controls the week before (weather was lovely) and returned on Meet day to assist. Don Christensen and Howell helped put up directional signs and Don braved the rain to help me streamer the White course the morning of the Meet. Keith Liscinsky kept things running smoothly with Registration and insuring that all participants returned safely (we did end up with a missing group of JROTC cadets but they were found at Military Park Visitor Center). Walter Siegenthaler, Bill Ketring, and Al Rogers were on hand to help with registration, instruction and those many things that crop up. Lane Williamson went out into the rain a second time to pick up the Orange controls.

The season is winding down, so get out for the next three events and support your club.

Time Limit was 2 hours and results based on points accumulated. Minus 2 points for each minute overtime. 50 points maximum. OT means Over Time with no net points after deducting penalty points. (Webmaster's Note: We're left to wonder what "Did Not Finish" could mean in a score-O. Rather intriquing... I suspect their start time came up and they refused to leave the registration table.)

  Spring is in the Air!

McDowell Nature Preserve | 6-Apr-2002 | James Sisk, meet director.

April’s meet went very well with over 70 participants. And as a sharp contrast to March’s wet n’ cold weather (Webmaster's Note: ...caused by Dan Davis...), we had ideal O-conditions with crystal blue skies and low 60s temps. Along with the usual dedicated COK members, there were several first-timers and even a few out-of-state visitors. Doug Palmer, the MVP of the day, drove all the way from Georgia! Things were almost perfect except for a disputed control on the Red course (about 40% found it, which makes it suspect...). Dan says I can blame it on John Fairley, but since he wasn’t there, that doesn’t seem quite fair. So, I’ll blame it on the Vernal Equinox instead.

Don’t forget next month has National Orienteering Day and our last meet of the season. So, come on down to Kings Mountain National Military Park on May 4th and get in your last meet before the summer heat. Thanks again to those who came to McDowell and lived to tell about it.

National O Day, GPS Course, Rain

Kings Mtn Nat. Military Park | 4-May-2002 | John Fairley, meet director.

This was the last meet at the Military Park until our "A" Meet in 2003. We had to use the area south of the road that bisects the Military Park in order to meet the A meet requirements. This brought back memories of our "old" meets at Kings Mt. Military Park of 20 years ago to me. We used this area extensively back then on black and white maps based on USGS blow ups which we had put the trails on! That was Orienteering at its most challenging! You young whippersnappers with your 5 color maps and your computer generated maps - fah. Oh yes, we had to walk 5 miles to school in the snow too! Oh yes, we had some drizzles for this meet too! About 2 inches of drizzles. Good for you hardy souls that showed up on this challenging weather day.

For National Orienteering Day, we received a number of Bruton Compasses and gave a Map Tech CD to Jess Greer, the advisor of the JROTC unit from Taylors, SC. We figured he would get the most use out of it as we didn't have any other groups from SC. We gave the compasses to the various JROTC unit advisors to give out as prizes to their groups. Walter Siegenthaler and Bill Ketring helped with the meet as crew. They set up tarps and we had the registration table and the map table mostly dry!

Keith Liscinsky set up a GPS course and advertized it on the web through local Virginia, NC, SC and Georgia GPS web sites. Unfortunately we only had 3 GPS participants. Apparently the GPS instruments don't work so well in the rain! More reason to carry a spare compass even if you are using a GPS. Anyway, if you are interested in more GPS courses, send Keith an email at KeithL7855@aol.com.

We had a surprise when Don Christensen and I went out to pick up the controls the next weekend. The Park Rangers were having a controlled burn and some of the areas we had controls in were being burned! One control is still missing and presumed burned.

Hope everybody has a good summer!
