COK is known as a club with really good orienteers; however, some of you have been keeping your skill level a secret. We have members we know are good. What we didn't know is how good they are even in the DARK!

We placed 27 controls out there, some in "less than obvious" places, and the scores were really great. The results ranged from 3 errors to 6 errors or mismarked controls (many only slightly mismarked).

Most participants enjoyed a different type of challenge that tested observation and pacing skills. We were pleasantly surprised that over 30 folks showed up for the event....or was it for the food?

  Canoe-O at Latta

Latta Plantation Park | 9-Sep-2000 | Jim Hall
[Back to Top]

Twenty-three "paddlers" turned out for the orienteering by canoe meet at Latta Plantation Park and found 27 controls waiting around the shores of Mountain Island Lake in a course designed by Jim Hall and Nancy Stephens. As you can see from the results, Jim offered a 60-minute trial and a 90-minute trial with point values ranging from 5 to 100 points per control based on the distance from the start/finish. Since this was a Score-O with a time limit, penalty points deducted for overtime became increasingly severe the later the return: 1-5 minutes over deducted 1 point per minute from the score; 6-10 minutes over deducted 5 points per minute over and 10 plus minutes cost 10 points per minute.

We saw a few new faces (which we hope to see again) and we gained two new members. Thank you for the nice turnout. We are always pleased when a little hard work produces a fun time at orienteering.

  "Dang hot too"

Crowders Mtn Park | 28-Oct-2000 | Dick & Sylvia Davis
[Back to Top]

The October 28th meet held at Crowders Mountain State Park went well. Although the temperatures were on the warm side, no one seemed to suffer too much. Turnout was pretty good and the autumn colors were peaking. If you were not there, it's a shame.

Sylvia and I arrived from Montana on Friday the 20th and began putting out controls Monday the 23rd. Our first impression after being in the west the last six months was, "Wow, there are a lot of trees". Our second was, "Dang hot too". But it was nice running around outdoors and not having to worry about Grizzly bears. By the way, I have a new bear story. If any of you are interested, see me at Kings Mountain and I'll gladly tell it.

Enough of this rambling; following this are the results from Crowders.

  Lake Crawford

Kings Mtn State Park/Lake Crawford | 18-Nov-2000 | Walter Siegenthaler
[Back to Top]

Just one year after the A-meet we returned to Lake Crawford for our local meet. Once again the Blue Ridge JROTC Championship was ran in parallel to our meet. This was the 5th time that COK set the courses for this annual championship. Alexander Central High School from Taylorsville, NC takes care of the meet organization and administration, so that it is not too much of a load for our club. Since I was organizing the club meet, I did not have much time to spend with the JROTC folks. I believe they had over 300 cadets and instructors out on the courses competing for trophies. It is nice to see that there are a lot of young people being exposed to orienteering. Maybe in the future when we mention orienteering to somebody, they will know what we are talking about – that would be quite a change.

The weather was a bit on the cool side, but at least it was dry and much more comfortable then the following day as we got the surprise snowfall.

We had a total of about 88 people participating in the club meet. Due to some time restraint on my side I decided to set out a White, Yellow, Green and Red course, skipping the Orange. As people started to show up, I heard several comments like: "What, no Orange course today"? It shows once again that White, Yellow and Orange are a must for our local meets.

Setting beginners' courses at Lake Crawford is not an easy task. There are not too many trails and most of them are not looping around to use them for a White course. I ended up hanging streamers to guide the beginners from one trail to another and for on one leg I used the lake as a handrail, which is perfectly ok. On the other hand it is relatively easy to set advanced courses with all the re-entrances and valleys. There are also a number of interesting pits and knolls that make good control locations. Unfortunately, I made a mistake as I drew the master maps for Green and Red. I did show one of the controls about 100 meters to the north in the wrong dry ditch. This did cause some problems to some of the competitors.

Our new members from the Czech Republic, Pavlina Chladkova and Josef Trzicky, did show their experience in orienteering by wining the Green and the Red course respectively. However, the race on the Red course was very close, with Joe Hall being less than a minute behind Josef.

On the White course it was mainly a battle of the different groups of Boy Scout Troop 260. Four of their five groups finished within 12 minutes, with the team from South Meck HS JROTC (not competing in the JROTC champs) finishing in 3rd in between them.

A big thank you to everybody that helped me run this meet, I could not have done it without them: Joe Hall, control hanging and registration; Jim Hall, instruction; Dan Davis, water carrying, instruction and control pick-up; Mike Davis, control pick-up; Dick and Sylvia Davis, control pick-up.

  McDowell Park

McDowell Park | 2-Dec-2000 | Timo Jantti

The December Meet took place at the McDowell State Park. The terrain at the park was wonderful for orienteering, providing lots of interesting and challenging spots for controls as well as high and steep climbs. The weather was a bit rainy and chilly, which did not disturb the participation, which turned out to be pretty good. 21 individuals, and 9 groups of JNROTC members and scouts took part. The international (European) participation was delightful. Finland, Switzerland and former Czechoslovakia were all well represented. I set up three courses with many controls: white 2.5 km, orange 3.5 km, and green 5.6 km. The orange course was a shorter version of the more challenging green, and the controls were rather difficult ones requiring good, accurate map reading skills. Most of the participants spent a lot of hopefully enjoyable time in the woods going through the courses.

  Into 2001 at Latta

Latta Plantation | 6-Jan-2001 | Jeanie Martz, meet director.

We had a great turnout on a beautiful day for orienteering. The participants were new and experienced, young and old, and came from as far away as Columbia, Fayetteville and Winston-Salem.

Since there is little elevation change at Latta, I made the green course slightly long and annoying. There were many good competitors; check out those times!

Thank you to Charlie and Jennifer for helping with registration, timing and picking up the controls. Thanks to the Boy Scout who picked up the yellow controls to complete his orienteering badge requirements. And a big thank you to Dan who instructed the large group of CHOA club members; most of them were so inspired that they completed two courses.

  Reedy Creek

Reedy Creek Park | 1-Feb-2001 | Sandy Kohn, meet director.

We had a tremendous turnout with over 100 participants including a dozen or so each from: the CPCC orienteering class, the UNCC Venture Programs' leadership training, Army ROTC, plus some high school corps and over 20 from the Charlotte Outdoor Adventure Club (CHOA?). We had 182 starts. There were so many people that we ran out of registration forms, punch cards and even maps, though luckily the maps didn't run out until the last person. There were lines and lots of waiting: to register, to draw the controls from the master map, and to get a start time. Thanks for everyone's' patience.

The Yellow course had one mismarked control - listed as KP when it was actually KF. Sorry for the confusion. (I hereby declare jihad on Sandy Kohn.)

"... the Red course was going to be competitive..."

Kings Mtn. State Park | 3-Mar-2001 | Dan Davis, meet director.

(Ol' Dan gets his results to me at the COK website faster'n anyone else... and he even sent in the following write-up after I leaned on him.)

I turned to Don, who was keeping time, to see how long Joseph had been out on the Red course. "If Joseph doesn't show in 2 minutes, Pasi has him beat" was Don's reply. We knew the Red course was going to be competitive as Pasi, Joseph, and the famous Hall boys, Jim and Joe were all here. Too bad Walter was in Switzerland or it would have been even more exciting. This year has had lots of tight competition on the long course between this group and with Martin Farenfield showing up from time to time. The words were hardly out of Don's mouth, when Joseph came into view starting the long run up the hill to the finish. Incidentally, for those of you that don't like to finish with a up hill run, sorry about that but we had to take into consideration that we might have a rainy day and the Meet Directors planned to observe the finish under the shelter of the front porch of the lodge. Turned out to be a good decision.

Well, Joseph pushed Pasi out of first place an Red and, as you can see from the results, we had some very good performances. Look at Green. Also, some close competition. In fact, all courses were competitive.

Club meets are more than just competition though and despite the rain, we had a good turn out of those that just enjoy orienteering no matter where they finish. KMSP is an excellent location and gives the course setter ample opportunity to develop interesting routes. We have new people showing up with an orienteering background and we are also attracting several that are new but are gaining skills rapidly.

In addition to Don serving as my co-director, I appreciate Phyllis Tarrant handling Registration and Scott Pyle, John Fairley, and Howell Peterson helping with control pick-up.

  Kings National

Kings Mtn. National Military Park | 7-Apr-2001 | Pasi Ronkainen, meet director.

Hot, hot, hot – summer is back. These were the feelings we had during our meeting in Kings Mountain. About fifty orienteerers came to enjoy their day finding out those white and orange control flags I had set earlier during couple of Friday afternoons.

Five courses were available (white, yellow, orange, green and red). White and yellow courses were more difficult than normal since I was trying to avoid using those trails we have been using in earlier meetings. According to the comments after finish attendants were pleased with the challenges.

Looking at the results in the longer courses, it is obvious that there were some challenges also there. Red and green had same legs up to the fourth control – first two controls were challenging and giving headaches to our most experienced fellows!

Since I am moving back to Finland (again) with my family, I would like to use this chance to thank you all in our klubb of the good time we have been able to spend around orienteering here in Charlotte. Good luck for everyone and if I will have any chance during my business trips back to US, I will try to participate in your meetings.

  National Orienteering Day

Reedy Creek Park | Cinco de Mayo, 2001 | Blair Peery & Arlene Roman, meet directors.

Roughly 42 competitors turned out on Saturday for a hot day in the woods. The National Orienteering Day meet was a chance for beginners to get a taste of the sport, so there was a White course and a Yellow course only. Many registrants were a bit tentative about what to do, and we all tried to make them feel comfortable and welcome. They were greatly relieved to find instructors on hand to run through the drill with them.

Arlene and I arrived early to set out the controls. We've never set courses before, and were nervous about getting everything ready. The orange tape we had left out from the weekend before was a time saver (even though a couple had vanished in the interim). It was a beautiful day. Thinking of the hot sun on its way, we set up the registration in a nice shady spot. Don't tell, but we also swiped one of the picnic tables from a nearby shelter to lay out the master maps.

Comments at the end by competitors showed no problems finding controls. I didn't think we would screw up a White or Yellow, but you never know! There were reports of a few snakes, and poison ivy everywhere. The worst he'd ever seen, said one competitor. Everyone seemed pleased with the event. Many were not concerned about their times - they just wanted to try out orienteering and have a good stroll through the woods. One even admitted to visiting the Environmental Center during her course.

A tip of the hat to Walter Siegenthaler and Charles McComas for giving instruction to the swarms of new people. Those lessons would have been too much for us to handle along with registration duties, so we are very grateful. And Barbara Scruggs passed on a big Hello from ex-COK member Bill Ketring, who's up in Portland, OR, "enjoying" the rain. Hi Bill!
