[Back to Top] This was another one of our summer mid-week events. Most of us know Latta Plantation as a park with a lot of dense vegetation and probably think it is crazy to have a meet there in summer. Well, I don’t like the thick and thorny stuff either, so I went ahead and set courses in the more open areas of the park. I was actually surprised myself to find some areas well runable. For the not so runable legs I tried to leave an option of taking a longer route along a trail. I set White, Orange and Green courses and was ready for a large turnout. Unfortunately, this did not happen, we had a total of only 6 participants. We really would like to know why so many members stayed away from this meet. Was it the threat of rain showers, the scare of the thick woods, did that many just forget that there was an O-meet, or was everybody on vacation? Please let us know, so that we know what to do next year (can’t do anything about the weather). Jim Hall proved that the park is runable in summer by running the 5Km green course in 45 minutes – well done Jim. Thanks to Nelson Bass and Monica Siegenthaler for picking up the controls the next day. With an evening meet like that it is not possible to pick up all controls before it gets dark. I think everyone that came out to the meet enjoyed it and I hope we get enough participation in the future, so that we can continue our summer events. White Course

Morrow Mountain
[Back to Top] Hey, all you NASCAR fans missed a great day of orienteering at Morrow Mountain. The change of the Meet date to a NASCAR race and Columbus day weekend caused the attendance to be much less than last season. Especially noticeable in their absence were the JROTC and scouting groups. Unfortunately a law enforcement exercise was occurring in the park on the weekend we originally had scheduled. Those that did attend braved the deadfall in the park. These numerous patches of "fight" forest placed a premium on route selection and map reading skills. Walter Sieganthaler, the Red course winner, commented that the key to a fast run was to run between the "green". Our Yellow course orienteerers did well with Kertta Jantti setting the pace at 55:29. The single DNF in this field was first time orienteerer and new member Geert Deuetele who successfully completed the White course, but just ran out of time on the Yellow. Welcome to our first time orienteers and new members and thanks to everyone who helped to get the meet set up. A special thought for the low life who stole the bag for the finish control on the Yellow/Green/Red course sometime during the week between course setup and the meet day. (Hey! I didn't think anyone would miss it... -Blair) To the people and groups that could not attend the meet, we missed you and hope that you can make the rest of the meets this season. Hopefully there will not be any conflicts next season and we all can run between the green at Morrow Mountain. White Course (2.2K)

January in Latta
[Back to Top] Blue skies and crisp winter air welcomed nearly eighty participants to Latta Plantation Park Saturday, January 8th. As a second time meet director, the outcome was gratifying. Participants ranged from club members, to scouts, and to first time orienteers from the community. I thank all who came out for the meet. Four courses were offered; white, yellow, orange, and green. The start was in a new location this year. Instead of the shelters at the end of Sample Rd, I used the parking lot where horse trailers are often parked. This allowed the green course to stretch out into the northern part of the park which is otherwise quite difficult to integrate. I was glad to see that each course had a solid number of participants. Furthermore, each course had excellent winning times, and I won't forget to mention the effort that all the participants put forth to complete the courses. This effort and enjoyment from the participants made my hard work worthwhile. The meet, however, would not have been successful without those club members who came out willing to help. I hope that everyone enjoyed the meet. Please feel free to contact me with any comments or suggestions -- they will only help me improve in the years to come. White Course

Reedy Creek
[Back to Top] Another GREAT turnout for Orienteering at Reedy Creek Park. We had over 80 people on three courses, consisting of some Klubb members, some new comers, a large group of ROTC from UNC Davidson and a large group of JROTC that came all the way from Clemmons, NC. The weather was just right for a hike in the woods: sunny and a bit on the cool side. The winter storm that hit the park the week before had for the most part melted off, however it did cause some damage with down trees. This park has relatively level terrain, but it makes up for it by having an excessive amount of underbrush and thickets to slow you down, and, my favorite as the course setter, several large creeks to cross. To all the Orienteers who went out on the courses in this park, give yourself a pat on the back for being dedicated Orienteers in taking on the "Thicket Patch". A few controls got some good comments as the Orienteers returned from the courses, such as the stream junction control on the Orange course, it was in fact "at" the stream junction. The cliff control on the Green course gave a little trouble to some who overshot or undershot the attack point off of the trail and the thickets getting to it. And the muddy (ask John Fairley) and steep creek crossing both Green and Orange had to cross on their final leg back to the finish. Thank you to Dan Davis and Walter Siegenthaler for handling the course instruction with the ROTC and the JROTC. Also thank you to Al Rogers for taking care of the massive amount of registration that seemed to go on all morning. And thank you to Keith Liscinsky for all of his help with time keeping. As you can see, it take a lot of help to put on an Orienteering event. Volunteer to help your Klubb! White Course

Kings Mtn State Park, Lake Crawford
[Back to Top] The COK meet held at Lake Crawford was certainly not the best-attended meet this year. The threat of rain kept all but the hard core "O" folks away. It was warm but wet for the early starters, and the weather improved as the day progressed. We had only one family on White, three individuals on Red and six individuals or groups on Green. Orange was the most popular course with twelve individuals or groups starting. These participants do not include Dan Davis's "O" class from CPCC. He had a very good class that did Orange/Green on Saturday, and all of them completed the Red course on Sunday! That's not bad for a couple of days of instruction. I think Dan has recruited some new club members who will continue to improve their skills by participating in future meets. The Green/Red courses called for careful navigation as the possibility of parallel error existed on many legs. My apologies for a miscopied control location that increased times by 15 to 20 minutes. That was my parallel error! See you at John Fairley's Camp Grimes meet on March 18 and 19 and/or at Timo Jantti's Kings Mountain State Park meet on April 1. These should both be good meets.
