  Weather Gods are Good

Here are late tidings from the January 7th orienteering meet at Latta Plantation. There was a major turnout, but the director’s team handled it. Well done, Mark.

  Schedule Change

It seems one of our meets was set to happen on Easter weekend, and the Powers That Be have decreed that to be a no-no.

Therefore we have altered Time and Space such that the Lake Crawford meet (formerly on April 7) will now take place on March 24. Please make a note of it.

  How Sticky Was It?

James Sisk sums up the experience at McDowell:

It was a great day overall with tons of people (most of whom didn't cuss me out... but Josef did for using the north part of the park which, admittedly, is pretty stanky).

Results are on display in the East Gallery. Every effort has been made to ensure that they won't stank.

  Lake York

David Alexander has directed another winning meet at Kings Mountain. A short but heartfelt report plus all the numbers are supplied for your edification. Or click the Results button to the left.

  Season Opener

Bill Ketring lead us through a meet on Oct 1st, plus the Membership Meeting and Picnic. The results are here.

  Bubba Goat Added

The BOK has announced the 2011 Bubba Goat plus a shorter version, amusingly titled the “Pygmy Goat”. It’s a popular event so we’ve added it to our meet calendar on Sunday, November 6th.

Note:  You must pre-register and pay in advance to play! Info available at backwoodsok.org/bubba-goat-2011.

  New Meet Schedule

Summer is hot... but it won’t be here forever.

The COK Board has released the preliminary meet calendar for the upcoming season. You can see it by going to the Schedule page. While there are only seven events listed as of this date, the Board hopes to add more if possible. These dates are subject to change as they are being double-checked for conflicts, but we thought you’d like to know where we stand.

The “Next Event” graphic at the top of the home page will always reflect the schedule current at the time of viewing. It’s just nifty keen-o that way.

  COK Board Decisions

During the bodacious Doard of Birectors* meeting held July 1st, several decisions were reached.

New E-Punch Equipment

We are going to upgrade our electronic punch modules, all 40 of them. The modules are the small field pieces at the controls that you plug your finger sticks into, in courses that use e-punch instead of the regular paper punch. Old finger sticks will still work fine in the new modules, and these modules will be faster, smaller, consume less power and have software advantages as well.

Free Membership for Meet Directors

The meet directors deserve a round of applause from all of us. And the BoD thought maybe they deserved something a little more tangible... so starting in the upcoming season, all meet directors will have their annual COK membership paid for them by the club.

Updated Map Fees

The map fee schedule has been overhauled as well. Effective this upcoming season, there will be three tiers. The general public will pay $8 per map; special groups such as the Boy Scouts or the ROTC will pay $6 per map; and finally the revered COK paying members will pay only $5 per map, the same price as before.

Meet Schedule

A partial schedule of meets for the 2010 - 2011 season has been established, with room to add more as dates are firmed up. It kicks off with National Orienteering Day in mid-September. We'll let you know as new meets are added to the schedule.

Fill Out Meet Forms in Advance

There’s always a minor hassle getting registered at the start of a meet. Everyone is crowding around the little table filling out forms at once, and there’s a fair amount of delay before the you get to hit the woods and the fun begins. Well, let’s see if we can help.

Here’s our Meet Registration form you can click on and print right off the website*. Print as many copies as you need! It has the waiver for you or an adult guardian to sign, and all the information on pricing so you can have your money worked out. Bring the completed registration form (and the cash-ola, of course) to the meet with you.

Application for Membership

Paying your club dues and registering for a meet are really unrelated, so we’ve made two forms instead of the older combined form. To join the COK (or simply to renew), you may either mail in your check plus form or bring them to a meet.

Here is our Application for Membership form*. Like the meet registration form above, it requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader to view or print. See below.

*Adobe’s free Acrobat Reader is required. It can be downloaded here if it’s not already on your computer.

  Meet Director's Reporting Document

There is a standard form for Meet Directors’ use when emailing results to the COK website. Using it will speed up the process, i.e., less translation and retyping will be involved. Take a look at this page which outlines the simple process. It’s easy. Meet Directors, vow to be fast this season! I’ll do the same.
